License classes generally are based on GVWR, not curb weight. I would bet its GVWR isn’t much higher than an HD Silverado, but who knows?
You do not need a CDL until 26K lbs.

In general, for an equivalent sized vehicle, an EV will always weigh more than an ICE. This should not be surprising. The larger the vehicle, the larger the battery and motors need to be.

Having seen the prototype at Barrett Jackson, it is not totally surprising. The Hummer is a big truck, especially compared to the Rivian or Bronco. It is definitely as wide as a dually pickup, just not as long.

FYI, I was at my GMC dealership last week and they expect to have one in November timeframe.

It is interesting that the GM chief engineer for the Hummer follows one of the chat forums and he responded to concerns about the weight of the Hummer. Says with the low CG and 4 wheel steering handles like a light car.

Until you hit the sand or mud.
Well according to the thread about VIN numbers the GVWR for the R1T is 8001-9000lbs, not so far behind the Hummer. Bigger tires on the Hummer.

Rivian will already be heavy for sand & mud with a ~6K curb weight, and Hummer is around 3K more, which is crazy.

Sand equation is a vehicle weight to surface area (tire contact patch) issue, but the Hummer tires are about 10% wider than the Rivian, not 50%.

I would keep that thing only on pavement, hardpack, or solid rock...

If sand were my use case, which it is not, I would go for something much smaller and lighter than either of these EVs.

GM proving grounds are in Yuma AZ where there are sand dunes, wonder if we will get to see any video from there.

I thought the 9K+ weight being thrown around for the Hummer was the curb weight and not GVWR?
The Hummer could weigh over a ton more (literally).

Correct. Almost 50% more than Rivian's (last spec'ed) curb weight a bit shy of 6K. I'm guessing the actual Rivian curb weight will be a little above 6K.

Yep it is curb weight with the biggest battery plus all the options. The Hummer will be a Class 3 truck, since GVWR will be over 10K. The F-150 EV curb weight is 6500lb with the small battery and over 7K with the larger battery. The R1T will be over 6K with the Max Pack, and will be a Class 2b truck.

Hummer also has to have clearance lamps because of the width, Ford Raptor falls into that category as well.

Thanks for sharing.

I would never buy one, but they got so many things right with these. I think the frunk opening with the grill, just like the Lightning, is going to end up being something that Rivian corrects in future models. Also removable roof? Check. Multifunction tailgate? Check. Fully operational rear window? Check. I know the prices are not equivalent, but these are all features I wish the R1T had at launch. I’m a touch (very) jealous.

And I do find it frustrating that these types of hands-on independent video reviews are already available for the Hummer and Lightning, but Rivian is still playing coy this late in the game.

In fairness to Rivian most of the list you reference was pulled out of a parts bin and modified where needed to fit the dimensions of the Hummer. Its unlikely they had to source new components or suppliers for anything but the drive system, BMS, basically the unique stuff for an electric vehicle. And even then they probably did not start from scratch. But I take your point, stuff that could be implemented in future Rivian iterations.

They’re also playing the marketing game because it will be well over a year until the MSRP is under $110k. I don’t think Lebron got to play with one because of his passion for electric vehicles but could be wrong. I also don’t get the limited media, they did Long Way Up and the Rebelle Rally so what’s the difference in letting a few personalities come and shoot for a day? Hell just invite some to a pre-order holder event You get to shoot the shit with Doug Demuro and sit in a Rivian.

To be clear he meant it would handle like a GM car sooo... in other words like a turd.
