Most of us waited years. I think you may not get the sympathy you’re expecting for waiting a bit over a month :)

Waiting stinks. But you’ll get used to it.
Hey! I resemble that remark!!

you should order an Aptera instead
Double Hey! I resemble that remark too!!

Seriously OP, as many have posted, customer communication is not Rivian's strong suit. Yes, they should do better, and in the age of AI, really should have some mechanism to track your order and provide a general status on a regular basis. Unfortunately, they don't.

Also as others have pointed out, long-ish waits are not unique to Rivian. I actually waited about six months for my Telluride, with zero communication from the dealer at any point. And a non-refundable deposit in place.

One thing I can promise you however is that it will be worth the wait.

Some customers need to readjust their expectations. Nothing wrong with wanting something exactly how you want it immediately, but they need to understand its a process.
I get the process and I get it takes time. But in the meantime, they could simply send out a regular email informing you everything is still on track, no delays, nothing wrong, and bonus points for "your vehicle will be manufactured on X, you can watch a live video when it rolls out the door. My expectations of the "fully digital purchase process" were a lot higher :D

Seems I really struck a nerve here. Sorry everyone you had to wait so long for your vehicle and had so much trouble. I've been following the company for a few years but since I didn't order / preorder, I didn't get any of the pain so far. There's a lot of frustration here and I hope Rivian addresses this in the near future with better updates on the manufacturing process, after all a custom order is somewhat special and should be treated that way.

Oh, and nobody has answered my original question: any tips on what to do while waiting? I watched videos, read the owner manual, reviewed my configuration a dozen times, still can't wait to finally get behind the wheel.

I agree that Rivian could be better about delivery communication. Part of the issue is Rivian contracts out the shipment of the vehicle, and those providers either don't give much information about where the vehicle is, or Rivian isn't set up to consolidate that info from every single provider.

Due to the way Just-In-Time production works, it likely means they had pre-decided a lot of the first few months of production. Shop vehicles are anywhere from being an assigned VIN for production, to sitting at the service center waiting to be prepped for delivery. Rivian can't even give an honest answer about how long any particular vehicle in the shop will take to be delivered. 1-6 weeks is a pretty huge window.

This is not distinctly a "Rivian" problem in the auto industry, but it certainly does feel like they should be dedicating more effort to tracking vehicles for customers when you are waiting for yours.

I ordered in May 22 and was told it would be "sometime after 23." I was ok with that because it's a car and as much as I love cars; it would get here sometime or another. I ended up getting it in September of 23. Communication for me was great. I had a guide that was fantastic. The local SC was also great.

What did I do during the wait? Loads of research. Watched a lot of reviews. For all the complaining we do on this board; it's a great source of information. This is my first EV and I'm still learning. All the best!

Yeah, didn't want to say it. But nevertheless it's a great concept.

In the meantime, read this forum. It's quite entertaining and educational.
For example, what wheel size did you order? Which snow tires are you going to use? Are you going to mount them on separate wheels? Are you going to do any off roading? What tires will you order when you replace the originals? Are you happy with the wheels? What are you going to do about a flat tire?

I agree it's a cool concept, but not practical to use in the real world where it has to share the road with distracted drivers driving huge, heavy vehicles at unsafe speeds. Kind of like the E-motorcycles... a great concept, but being nearly silent it adds yet another layer of possible danger to the equation.

I ordered a new F150 King Ranch on May 28th and I haven’t heard a peep. Apparently there are people who ordered a 2024 F150 LAST YEAR and still haven’t received a VIN or their truck.

Rivian is in good company it seems.

I'm amazed at how stringent auto crash regulations are, but yet we still allow people to drive motorcycles where they are totally exposed all of the time.

Nop, just wondering how you're all dealing with the anxiety and the wait when there's no word from the company about something you paid for. There should be better communication on their part.
Most of us became Zen masters during the years long delivery wait... some of us cried when the delivery finally came. Personally I celebrate the delivery anniversary similar to a wedding anniversary or birthday celebration.
Think of it like the excitement in anticipation of Christmas morning when you were 9... just lasting for years or in your case only a few short months. Congrats your gonna love your new Rivian!

Also to be clear you only paid the deposit not the full amount I'm assuming.

That's how they prime you for service wait times.
I ordered my R1T quad about 1 year ago expecting several months wait. Much to my surprise I received an email stating that my order was ready for pickup within minutes of placing the order. I was at the dealership the day before and they did not show the vehicle in stock. They must have just received a vehicle to my exact configuration. I ordered the vehicle on a Saturday and picked it up on a Tuesday. You may want to keep an eye on the vehicles available!
