Seems I really struck a nerve here. Sorry everyone you had to wait so long for your vehicle and had so much trouble. I've been following the company for a few years but since I didn't order / preorder, I didn't get any of the pain so far. There's a lot of frustration here and I hope Rivian addresses this in the near future with better updates on the manufacturing process, after all a custom order is somewhat special and should be treated that way.
Oh, and nobody has answered my original question: any tips on what to do while waiting? I watched videos, read the owner manual, reviewed my configuration a dozen times, still can't wait to finally get behind the wheel.
Hey, at least one of my tips was serious! Well, two: 1) there's threads on here that talk about accessories. Take a good look at what some people have recommended. There's everything from storage space organizers to off-road recovery stuff. 2) I redid my garage because it was booty and not deserving of the R1S. Did the fancy flake on the floors, ran power (oh! get your charging situation straight!) to strategic places, finished walls, painted, put up cabinets, etc. Give her a good home!Oh, and nobody has answered my original question: any tips on what to do while waiting? I will say that some of the things that you mention brief well, but in the years that many of us spent waiting, there were various iterations of communications approaches on Rivian's part. I'm more than certain that we, as a community, have bounced back and forth between "we're not getting enough communication" to "there's too much [meaningless] communication!" several times. In the end, the only communications that seemed to resonate were those that led with "it's time to lock in..." or "your delivery date is scheduled for X...".I get the process and I get it takes time. But in the meantime, they could simply send out a regular email informing you everything is still on track, no delays, nothing wrong, and bonus points for "your vehicle will be manufactured on X, you can watch a live video when it rolls out the door. My expectations of the "fully digital purchase process" were a lot higher![]()
Dude, I waited for 2 1/2 YEARS for my R1S. And yeah, it was worth the wait. How are you all keeping your cool? I ordered my R1S on June 6. Not a word since beside the reservation confirmation. Sales Rep can't say anything either. Delivery schedule is August - September, how are there no updates to manage expectations? Already seeing similar configs in the shop, which makes it even worse - they're building for the shop but not the custom orders? It would be awesome to get updates about when your car is scheduled to be built etc.
Like you have "heard", read your wait has been minimal. Some waited years for the, "your car is ready for delivery", update. How are you all keeping your cool? I ordered my R1S on June 6. Technically, first car.Is this your first EV?
Thanks! I have a few essentials in the Rivian shop that I want to get, but given the late delivery all my summer plans (camping with the family) have to be rescheduled to next year. The Gear Guard drive is the most critical to shop. No wall charger for me in a rental, but I figured I could extend from the basement and get a 240V cable into the garage for some faster charging if necessary.Hey, at least one of my tips was serious! Do you have a home charger and do you know if you'll get an adapter with your vehicle on delivery?
Thanks! I've rented an R1T last year on Turo and tested a few Teslas, I found charging a relatively easy topic, but there are also quite a few chargers around here in CO. Only had issues with hotels on Booking claiming "ev charger" and it's just a few unmarked 110V outlets in the garage with the spots taken by ICEs (not blaming them, the outlets were hard to spot). My advice, learn about charging and how it works.
This was my first EV and I was at first overwhelmed. Now I help a bunch of people who have EVs and Rivians including my FIL.
Plugshare is a great resource. Play around in ABRP as well.

As your first car & EV, this is the place to learn a lot from. I would urge you to research the L2 charger and get approval from your landlord. Also, look at the spare tyre kit if you already haven't. As others have said-loads to get up to speed here. Have fun!Technically, first car.

Thanks! Not sure how long we'll stay here and not paying for the electrical installation of the L2 (even with the incentives from Xcel Energy), so I'll wait with that until we make a decision. I think the extension cord is a great workaround, but will have to check the length and potential heat issues etc. Not planning to drive much during the week, this is mostly for adventure on the weekends, so the 110V charge may just workAs your first car & EV, this is the place to learn a lot from.
