Sounds like the update affected one of the ECU and is having a fit. Haven't encountered this yet after the update but I did do a soft reset when I noticed things were not quite snappy.

I have not seen this in my R1S yet but I have had it happen in my Tesla 3 or 4 times in the 8+ years I had it.

It it happens again soon I would probably note the time and call service but based on my Tesla experience I would not be concerned if it has only happened once.

…Just my 2 cents.

This happened to me two weeks ago prior to latest update while going through the mountains in Western NC in the rain on the interstate 40, which honestly freaked me out and thought everything was going to go dead on me in a curve and off the mountain I'd go. Just like yours, the speedometer reading was the only thing that didn't go completely off, but both screens essentially went black for a second and then came back up within 30 seconds. I'd already been on the road for 10 hours, and this was not a fun experience. Prayed it didn't do it again until i got back to Charlotte and it didn't. Figured it was some sort of bug that would correct in next update, and hasn't happened since, but it is concerning. I did not report since it hasn't happened since that day. Maybe i should at least report it. Service center 5 hours away, so that makes me hesitate even thinking about the 10 hr round trip, twice, to drop off and pick up if this is an issue resolved in the update. Still scares the crap out of you going through pouring rain on the interstate in the winding mountain road with an 18 wheeler next to you when it goes blank!!

A similar "Speed Only, Display Otherwise Black" phenomenon happened to us on the R1S, once, in April 2024.

Before that, we were getting messages every 30-200 miles while in Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) saying, "Take Control Now. System Fault Detected."

Afterwards, the "Take Control Now, System Fault Detected" message hasn't appeared again; ACC functions consistently as designed; and the "Speed Only, Display Otherwise Black" phenomenon hasn't appeared again.

I have no idea if the black screens were related to the resolution of the ACC problem or not. I'm just happy to have both Rivians working as intended.

Best to all!

While I was driving, both screens restarted with the Rivian logo, just like during a soft restart. Has anyone else experienced this issue, or should I talk to the service center (SC

yes but i wouldn’t worry about it unless it happens regularly

I've had it it happen twice over the last year. So it happens, but everything seems to come back online. I usually do a hard reset of everything after it happens whenever I get a chance.

Wow! I haven‘t had that happen and would be sh****g bricks also. But I did notice in the manual that there are two restarts available. The first is the software on the screen that we all see and can be initiated by the steering wheel buttons. The second is stated as restarting the truck (in my case) which likely (hopefully) controls all the critical driving tasks for safety reasons so the truck does not die while in traffic. I think this involves a steering wheel button and a rearview mirror button.

I think some people have reported unplugging their drive cam drive has fixed this issue.
Just unplugged my drive camera card hoping this fixes my same issue on my 2022. After it rebooted without that installed everything came up like it had just installed the update with the “what’s new” screens. Gear guard started recording again too. Hoping that’s a temp fix for now!! Fingers crossed

Had the same thing happen right after I started driving for the first time after installing that update last week. It’s happened a few other times over the last year or so, not too worried about it since the car drives fine while the screens reboot.
