... I'm currently on my second roof basket. I have a custom solution with the baskey semi-permanently bolted to the cross bars as a single unit that I can easily add and remove on my own (no need for a garage pulley setup or anything like that). My first was a great wire-mesh style but that's flexible enough that I had to change to a standard tubular style base to get the extra large that I wanted, so now I'm on the large one. I really only use the basket in winter for road trips so it stays on a roller cart in the garage the rest of the year, but I like how it is modular.
  1. The wind noise bothers me.
  2. The height is annoying, my setup adds maybe 8" to the vehicle height.
  3. I have a giant (wide and long) basket but it still isn't as long as the R1S, which bothers my obsessive tendancies.
I dream of something like a Prinsu, but I have questions
  1. How much noise is there, really? Are there any YouTube videos of the cabin noise before and after? I tried and couldn't find anything like that.
  2. How much height does it add?
  3. How do people attach luggage (my use case)? Without the basket edges I wonder if people use bolt-on attachments or something else to really securely hold stuff.
  4. Is there a used market? If I could get one for like $750 out the door I'd do it in a heartbeat. Closer to $2k (with tax) just feels like too much, unfortunately, especially when I compare to my cheapo $250 Chinese racks that are, frankly, very solid build quality.

I saw a new-looking Mars Expedition Rack on Austin, TX Facebook Marketplace today for $1,200.
That might be worth a road trip if you could get it for $900.

I can't imagine driving from CA to TX for a roof rack.
