Looking for some advice here from tire experts.

I have the 22” sport brights and am looking for an AT tire or an all season with more aggressive tread.

Found the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek in 285/45/22 with 114T and XL load range - https://coopertire.com/en-us/find-tires/all-tires/discoverer-rugged-trek

I see the stock Pirelli’s are 116H. Are these Cooper’s safe to run on the S?

Also, they are roughly .5” smaller in diameter and 13 lbs heavier per tire compared to stock. Is this the recipe for a big range hit or negligible?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge

114 means 2535lb per tire
116 means 2756lb per tire

thats almost 880lb less weight total.

Most tire shops won’t mount those tires on a Rivian as they can be a safety issue as those tires will be running much closer to their max weight rating.

You’d be better with a tire with a higher weight rating

Appreciate the info. On the Cooper spec sheet the max load is listed as 2601lb per tire. I saw the GVWR for the S is 8532lb, so that gives a cushion of 1872lb.

Am I missing something in my calculation?

The GVWR is different for each end (was going to say "axle", but there are none) of the vehicle. On my R1S the front GVWR is 4134 lbs., and the rear GVWR is 4960 lbs.

So two of those tires you picked would support, using your figures, 5202 lbs. Is that sufficient for the rear GVWR of 4960 lbs.? The tire rating is higher, but is there a need for a safety factor? I don't know as I am no expert in this.

Good point about the different “ends” having different GVWR. I assume the higher rating for the rear end is to account for cargo weight.

My $0.02.

My R1T came with 22’s and I also have a set of aftermarket 20’s with BFG AT’s. I prefer driving it with the 20’s because I don’t have to worry about touching a curb & scratching my wheel, because the sidewalls on the stock 22” tires aren‘t tall or wide enough to protect the rims from curbs. I might consider some bigger tires on the 22’s someday, or I might sell them and just use the 20’s.

Based on my experience, I wouldn’t recommend a tire with a smaller sidewall than the stock 22’s, especially on an All Terrain tire. The OEM 20” tires are an inch taller than the 22’s (275/65/20 vs 275/50/22). If switching to AT 22” tires, it would be good to have taller sidewalls, perhaps 55 or 60 series, which should fit fine because their height & width should be similar to the OEM 20’s. A bigger sidewall tire should also give the more aggressive look you’re after, and would perform better off road or in snow. Your range will be reduced with any AT tire, if you care.

I’ve had Conti TerrainContact ATs (in OE size) on mine for over 6000 miles and can highly recommend them.

Range impact in mixed driving is minimal and even on long journeys probably only 5% to maybe 10% max. Negligible difference in road noise from the stock PZeros. So far they’re wearing perfectly even. Still not as true an all terrain as K02s or similar E rated LT ATs, but much better than the stock performance/street-biased all seasons.

Probably fine but don't overload the truck, since you are reducing the safety factor quite a bit.
