Not sure where that came from, but I do recall people here who have run the low profile cables without issue. I think you would be good either way. I was just sharing what the owner’s guide said about it.
I believe the suggestion to use chains is for the 21 and 22” wheels.(the gray section in your original pic of the manual). Snow socks are recommended for 20” wheels.

I thought I remembered the original recommendation for all 3 sizes (20, 21, and 22”) was to use snow socks. Seeing the current recommendation that differentiates between the 20” wheel from the other two sizes is odd. I get that the 65R20 tire has less clearance than the 55R21 and 50R22 . Shouldn’t the recommendation for the 21 and 22 inch wheels include the recommendation for the 20” wheels? -> ok to use chains or socks?

I've used the SCC Super Z8 cables on my truck at low speeds while off-roading without issue, despite having the largest wheel/tire combo (275/65/R20) and Rivian recommending against it for that size. I mounted them on the rear wheels and didn't exceed 20 MPH - which seems to be the speed limit for using them without damage on the 20" AT, per other members' experience.

The Super Z cables are well-designed and used extensively by commercial truckers, fire departments, utility trucks, etc., and meet Rivian's low-clearance requirements. Since you have the 21" wheels, you can safely use them without voiding the warranty, so long as you mount them on the rear wheels according the owner's manual.

I also carry snow socks for conditions where there's lots of snow only and I will be traveling longer distances. In conditions where there's lots of snow but no ice they are phenomenal. It's like having velcro on the tires and the ride is butter smooth. However, socks will offer zero additional traction on ice, which is why I also carry chains.

I'm trying the LaClede Alpha Trax. They're webbing-based, and meet the Class S clearance requirements.

I have the 22", and LaClede recommended the AT-747 size. They don't fit. I think as in this video, the correct size (definitely for the 21") is the AT-751 size.

Did you end up getting the AT-751 for your 22”? Did they work well? Anything special you need to know (keep car in certain height? I have the R1S Dual Large)? Can they be safely installed on all 4 tires or really only should install on rears?

Yes, I got the AT-751s. I still do need to test-fit them. Will reply here when I do.

I think Rivian recommends cables only on the rear wheels (though I've heard people have had success on the front as well).

I test-fitted the Alpha Trax AT-751 on my 22" sport dark wheels. They fit *like a glove." Super tight, but not a problem locking the cables or installing the retention clips.

Did you install on all four wheels or just the rears?

I only bought one set, which has chains for two wheels. For the test I installed only on the rear passenger wheel. Rivian says not to put chains on the front, so when I go to the snow, I'll plan on only installing on the rears tires only.

Hi Jason,

Not sure if you've decided on your chains/socks solution yet, or gone on your trip already, but here is what I purchased (via Amazon back in Mar 2023) for my R1T with the stock 21" rims/tires in preparation for a ski trip.

They were chosen for fitting the stock 21" OEM tires (275/55/R21), using knowledge gained from Forum discussions and the recommendation in the manual that 21" rims/tires can use low profile cables on the rear.

I also got socks for the front, just to be extra safe - in case it got really slick, figuring they'd enhance steer-ability on the front end.

Both checked out as fitting fine in my driveway. Fortunately, we didn't need them on the trip, so they haven't been used in real world conditions yet.

I am in San Diego too, and if you'd like to check out how they fit before making your choice/purchase I'd be glad to let you take a look at them and try them on your R1T.

As a matter of fact, I've since traded my R1T for an R1S with 20" AT tires and can't use them any more. So, these items sit in my garage collecting dust. Let me know if you have any interest in checking them out.
