I’m really interested in the details of how to make this shelf happen. This project has been on my “wish list” for a while since I don’t have a tonneau and I know the empty space is there. I plan to use it to store recovery gear so it’s easily accessible, but still out of the way. I don’t have a 3D printer (yet), though there are places now that I think will print parts for you by mail.

The spare tire well would be a better place IMO for water tanks. Firstly, there are several manufacturers that sell water tanks meant to go in place of spare tires. This location also has the ability to hold a higher capacity, and keeps the weight lower in the vehicle. Lastly, it has a drain plug should a leak develop. If I put a tank down there I figured I would plumb it through the drain hole so I don’t have to drill through the cover/bed floor.

My plan is to get an installation guide together and make the parts available on the website in the near future.

The water tank would have been more up my alley but I also have that pesky power tonneau cover using that space anyway. ?‍♂
Water tank that can be pressurized by the compressor… what a great idea. Certainly lower center of mass that roof rack mounted ones.

This is awesome @Bf3, but I've got the BuiltRight molle panel. :( Do you know if anyone has looked into making a top-entry storage box in there?

But how would I carry the spare? ? We need a swing away hitch carrier with provisions to mount other things like jack, etc. Mission creep!

Dirtcom sells one that fits the R1T. I reached out to Rigd, and theirs doesn't quite fit, but with enough interest they'd be willing to fab one up that did... (I like theirs better than the dirtcom one...)

Honestly I don't even need a pressurized tank as I have a pump and 12V in my bed, I also already have a 5 Gal tank but limited space for gray water so if I could move my fresh tank to this 'unused' space that would be my motivation.

Of course I would also need to figure out how to remove the tonneau I have occupying that space.

I have a humble suggestion for your consideration. For those of us that are pretty DIY-handy and have access to a 3D printer, have you considered just selling the STL files, parts list and install guide? You get money without having to actually buy/ship anything on your end.

Top entry would be much more difficult. There’s a large metal bracket that all the trim attaches to and at least on mine the bolts have been welded in place. The other wrinkle is you have to remove the top trim going all the way down the bed to get access to the trim above the tonneau space.

Right? I’ve got a 12v water pump system and I plan to put a water tank in the bed behind my refrigerator, but it would be great to have something just tucked away. Maybe if enough people are interested in the tank we can make it happen.

Out of curiosity, what is the actual cargo area volume available in this space?
