Coverage. For instance, if totaled, SF gives market value at time of loss. Rivian/Nationwide has new car replacement.
I just got my 6 month nenewal notice, $490. I'll take the risk that I can replace my 2 year old R1T with a similar vehicle if I can pay 4 times less in insurance.

SF does not cover off-road damage. Rivian/Nationwide does not specify use on pavement only.
I have no interest in going off road. I bought it because it goes 0 to 60 in 3.1 seconds without ever having to stop at a fucking gas station.

Your use case obviously isn’t universal. Just because it works for you, doesn’t mean everyone else paying more is doing it wrong and getting screwed. It's moot to compare costs without context of [equal] coverage. That was the point.

Every choice taken has consequences. Choosing to buy or choosing how to insure have consequences. Not understanding the consequences beforehand and then be shocked… also the point.

So between insurance and Registration the costs with a Rivian are ridiculous. Insurance is $4000 a year and registration is $1200!!! WTF. I love the truck but no way it should be so much more than my 2018 GMC 1500 which was fully loaded. My old registration was $400 and insurance was $1200 a year. So instead of $1600 a year it is $5200!!!

Varies with your place of residence and value of vehicle, of course, but insurance is up dramatically. Brace yourself, as this ramp will continue with increasing climate related disaster losses. Homeowners insurance likewise. Our long term insurer AARP / The Hartford would not even cover our EV’s - Polestar or Rivian Fortunately GEICO did..

Strange. I'm also in OC and we pay $1100/year for R1S full coverage, and our first registration renewal was $940, and that's with vanity plates. We are in San Clemente; not sure if that makes a difference.

Who are you using for insurance? I'm in Yorba Linda and have no accidents or tickets.

Judging by your list of vehicles... multi-line discount, if same insurance company. Age and each insurer's risk assessment modeling play a role also. Most of the registration cost is based on vehicle value.

But my Rivian does pay taxes when we buy electricity. It is a double tax.
Lol!!!! It’s not a double tax at all. You pay electric infrastructure usage tax for the electricity to the state. You pay highway infrastructure tax to the state in gas tax. Completely different.

In North Carolina, my insurance with Allstate for my two year old R1T is about $1,000 annually. I just renewed my license plate, taxes, and fees. It was $835. That includes the EV fee of $180, a weighted plate fee for the combined vehicle with trailer of $266 (for 15,000 pound combined vehicle and trailer, as my boat weighs the same as the R1T), and county/city property taxes make up the rest. The fee I paid to register my previous Silverado was the same, less the $180 EV charge to make up for no gas tax. I’m not unhappy with this.

For those in CA and are finding Rivian/Nationwide to be too expensive and considering a switch... I reached out to a Rivian/Nationwide advisor and asked: If I choose to not renew, to try another insurer for a while, would I be able to return to Rivian/Nationwide at a later date and resume same coverage.

Here is his reply:
Thank you for reaching out. This is an important question, as insurance carriers have been changing their new business guidelines quite a bit lately. At this time, we are not issuing new policies for single vehicles. Additionally, if Nationwide changes their minds on this and starts letting us write those policies again, we will not be able to add new car replacement to that policy, as that coverage can only be added within the vehicle's first six months being in your possession. My apologies for that. If you still shop around and leave, we may have another carrier by the time you wish to return. We cannot make any promises though, as it's been very hard to find a carrier that's interested in signing up new agencies in CA given most want to shrink their business in the state.

My reg fees were much higher at $975, but my insurance is much lower. I pay about $1,620 for insurance. Full tank of gas is like $137 on GMC 1500. Full L2 charge is $30.72.

Shop around for insurance. I'm in NJ, and with Geico, my R1T is ~$840/year (including Accident Forgiveness). I have no tickets or accidents and completed a defensive driving course.

Welcome to California! It's the sunshine tax.
Every time I see someone complain about the CA registration fee I tell them they're much better off than being in Virginia. Virginia charges annual personal property tax on vehicles. It's based on an arbitrary valuation that is inconsistent from county to county. Our 2023 personal property tax on the Rivian was $2,600. This is in addition to our registration fees (which aren't bad) and an EV fee.

Insurance is based on so many different factors. Our R1T is no more or less than our Porsche Macan or our Miata. We also have it bundled with home/umbrella. Also, check your deductible. Lower the deductible, the higher the premium.
