I believe some people are working on Molten Salt/Thorium reactors. The water reactors are supposedly cheaper to build and the industry (e.g. GE) wanted to go cheap so that is what was sold throughout the world. What they did not plan adequately for was the disposal of the spent fuel. Thorium does not have that problem. They also tried the molten salt idea for the nuclear jet engine program. And they got adequate thrust but the shielding to protect the crew would have made the plane too heavy. The Soviet Union supposedly flew their nuclear plane and irradiated the crew. I believe the validity of that report has yet to be proven.

If you want to geek out on this stuff, I recommend Atomic Adventures, Atomic Awakening, and Atomic Accidents (3 seperate books) by James Mahaffey. For a more in depth treatise, I recommend The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes.
