What does black dot and location on power curve mean?

I’m curious what the location of the black dot means on this display. I get that the bar goes down from the dot and green if I am in regen and upwards and yellow if I’m using power, but why is the dot where it is and what is the whole range of the curve supposed to mean?

Are you talking about the dot over D? The one that shows you which gear you’re in? Since it’s over D you’re driving forward. R is for reverse and when the dot is over the P you’re in park.

I believe he is referring to the black dot that is at the 4 o’clock position on the power curve. I’m curious as well.

Pretty sure he means the dot in the power curve. I don't recall ever seeing this so I'm curious if someone else has an answer.

The black dot is "zero". If the yellow bar is showing above the dot, that's positive power usage. If the green bar is showing below the dot, that's negative power usage - i.e. your battery is being charged by the motors instead of driving them.

The motors can generate a lot more power than the battery can accept under most conditions, so the maximum length of the yellow bar is a lot more than the maximum length of the green bar, and that's why the zero point is closer to the bottom than the top.

VSG nailed it. The black dot can be a helpful reference in helping you coast the vehicle as well.

For some reason I was almost thinking the dot would move based on your average kw usage. Thanks for the explanation, makes perfect sense.

If the battery can’t take all the KWs generated, where do the KWs go? The power grid keeps balance by varying generation based on demand. My solar system does so by dumping to the grid. How do EVs do it?

So the location of the black dot never changes, the yellow & green change around it. Its a reference point. I never knew that.

Heating up and ablating the brake pads and rotors of the good old friction brakes. They are used when you need more deceleration than then regenerative braking can deliver.

I think Rivian determined the max rate of charge from the motors vs the max power of delivery and set the black dot appropriately there.

Black dot = neither adding nor subtracting power from the batteries, for propulsion anyway.

It gets wasted as heat. Battery can only be charged so quickly.
