1. Keeping my model 3 performance and no Rivian yet
2. Tri-motor cybertruck and no Rivian yet
3. Keeping my model 3 performance and replacing my wife’s 2017 SUV with an R1S.

We’ll probably eventually have a Rivian just don’t know which car it will replace or when.

In no real hurry. Pulling the trigger on the R1T depends on several factors, not the least of which is an in person experience with it.

F150 EV or hybrid

R1T vs F-150 Hybrid. Need a bed for bikes, Cub Scouts, and various other projects.

I like the R1T for no gas, frunk, parking ability, and performance.

I like the F-150 for reliability, service, large backseat, and long road trip freedom.

Not considering Cybertruck: Too bold, too big, the sides make it hard to reach in the bed, interior is too plain. Reliability and Service on our Model S is not meeting expectations. Price and electric range are impressive though.

Cybertruck is too big? The F150 with crew cab is even bigger.

I like everything about the R1T except the lack of android auto and the tiny bed. The bed on the R1T is pretty much useless for me. I currently have an F150 with a 5.5 ft bed and can barely fit bikes in it. The 4 ft bed on the R1T will come in handy for people that want some extra storage, but it won't get the job done for people who actually need to haul bigger stuff.

Ford F150 EV, definitely not a CT, or hummer. A truck of some kind will be my next vehicle. I would prefer that it be electric. If not electric, then a big 'ol diesel and a 5th wheel.

The current plan is a R1T LE and a small trailer. I think it's a pretty firm plan.

My second choice is the Model Y. I’ll have to give up a proper third row, the ability to do at least mild off roading, and other niceties (meridian sound, ventilated seats etc) for ~$25k less than a LE R1S.

By "mild off roading", are you referring to pea gravel? Honestly, the Model Y and the R1S are in two different classes. I love them both, but from my perspective, the Model Y is a "Pavement Princess". A great highway cruiser with lots of capabilities, but off-roading doesn't really seem like its forté. Would any Tesla owner actually consider any Overlanding in that vehicle? I think the Y will be a popular choice for many, but the main target market is different from that of the R1S.

I'm with you in the wannabe category. I may or may not do much off-road in the R1T, but I know I could. The same is true of the R1S. With the Model Y, I might want to, but I know I couldn't, or at least, shouldn't.

Yup exactly - I’ve seen some YouTubers trying to equip the Y with the right wheels and tires but there are hardware limitations that you just can’t get around like ride height and approach angles. For me it’s going to come down to, do I want to spend an extra 20-25k for the privilege of going off road one day? Because I know I’ll be too lazy to make it happen in a Y .

Basically EVs that come out between now and when Rivian can get an R1T to me is an option, but I'm pretty set on the Rivian. I'm also loath to go back to commuting in my Impreza. Hence the impatience. Lol.


I'd consider a Mach e, but the charging curve and inability it put a rack on it bothers me.

I will only consider another vehicle if Toyota/Lexus produced a 7 seat SUV. I would be inclined to check Audi if their E-Tron feedback is good as I really like their current E-trons but unfortunately no 7 seater yet.

The only way I can answer the question of this thread is to test drive everything I can. I had occasion to test drive the new Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD this week, and it was a fun time. Great acceleration and nice handling. Didn't get to try out one-pedal mode, but was told it is similar to that of other EVs. It was nicely appointed, trying to get the feel of the XC60 R-Design, but not quite there. It feels cramped and a little too upright for the backseat passengers in this two-row only model. Thought I took a pic of the sticker to check out later, but nothing on the phone. I heard $57k-ish after "Loyalty" discount and before tax incentives.

Handling was taut and would likely improve with something other than the Continental Contacts it was shod with. The man said the real-world range is about 210 miles, making it a city runabout in my eyes. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and of course it has that EV jump out of the chute. The nice part from my standpoint is that it felt very Volvo-like in most every respect. Decent storage in back for a smallish SUV, although the frunk is small in size. 60/40 split rear seat with a small pass-through port in the center armrest. It's nice that the frunk has a low liftover for easy access, even if only roomy enough for small items. Sadly, I didn't get to try the 360⁰ bird's eye camera view, but did listen to the Harman Kardon stereo and it sounded great. And here's something that will sound familiar: No Apple or Android systems as of yet. Should be available by free OTA update later.

While I am as solid as ever for my R1T, I'd bet the XC40 Recharge will compete with a smaller future generation of Rivian. I just happened to be in my local dealership for service and thought "why not". Because of COVID, they sent me out on my own. The Salesman said "Please have it back by 4:30!" and I said "End of April?! All right!" as I pulled out of the lot. ?
