MY REAL COMPLAINT IS WAITING FOR SOMETHING FOR 5 YEARS, POOR COMMUNICATION TO PLACE HOLDERS -- ETC. FIX ALL THAT AND I WILL HAVE NOTHING TO BITCH ABOUT!
Rivian announced the vehicle on 11/26/2018 - which was 3 years and 3 months ago. They said from day one that wouldn't begin producing vehicles before December of 2020 - which was 1 year and 3 months ago. My pre-order was placed on 11/26/2018. I never had any expectation of getting my truck before March of 2021 (3 months after the original date of the beginning of production). Looks like I'm gonna get my truck in March of 2022 - almost exactly ONE YEAR later than I had hoped. that doesn't seem too bad to me given that 2020 was basically lost to pandemic impacts. You can't possibly have been waiting for FIVE YEARS. You're being irrational.

About a year ago I pre ordered my R1T. I had no prior EV experience, only a desire to move away from ICE.

Over that year I have learned a great deal about EVs and about other OEMs and how they behave.

I have been and continue to be frustrated by Rivian’s communication BUT in my experience with Ford, Volvo and Kia, Rivian IMHO is no better or worse. Especially when considering that Rivian is a startup and bucking the same headwinds as everyone else.

However, I do think communication to customers can and should be much better for ALL car manufacturers. Especially now with the explosion of online ordering and selling directly to customers like Rivian, Tesla, Lucid ect.

Pre Ordered in 2018 was given a delivery window of 12/2023. You tell me the math ? IRRATIONAL....not as I see it. I bet that date( 12/2023 ) will also be pushed back again.

I think if you had written your earlier statement as, “MY REAL COMPLAINT IS that I anticipate WAITING FOR SOMETHING FOR 5 YEARS, POOR COMMUNICATION TO PLACE HOLDERS -- ETC. FIX ALL THAT AND I WILL HAVE NOTHING TO BITCH ABOUT!” (my addition in bold) then people who tend to read things literally, and who are likely to do the math, would be more sympathetic.

Beyond that, blaming the company today for something which hasn’t happened yet, your projected date slipping again in the future, doesn’t seem reasonable.

I completely understand your frustration! I’m just trying to explain my take on why some people may not react well to the information as presented.

Personally I never test drive any car I buy. I know what I want and I do tons of research and look at them up close. So no test drives doesn't bother me, although I know I'm the minority here.
I'm the exact opposite. I've never purchased a car without at least a modest test drive. Too much at stake for me to assume that I'm going to like it. How do the seats feel? How is the car over bumps? How does it handle? I happy with the driving dynamics? If I can't get answers to those types of questions, then I'm not buying.

Even with a 7 day 1,000 mile money back guarantee?

For me if I'm choosing between a cursory 20 minute test drive vs. the 7 day MBG route - I'm going with the latter.

I agree in theory. But there are just too many unknown how this will work in reality. What if I have a trade-in? What if I have outside financing? How do those things get resolved if I decide to return my truck after 7 days?

Test drive is key for me.

I've never had that deal before. That said, it's a much better option for sure, assuming that's it's not a hassle to return the vehicle if it comes to that.

You still have physical volume control. The left scroll wheel on the steering wheel adjusts the volume. You won't even need to take your hands off the wheel to make an adjustment. Only passengers will have to make do with the screen for changing volume.
Can the ac controls (fan speed, temp) also be controlled via the steering wheel? Or will that require looking away from the road and pecking away at the screen?

I don't believe so, at least not according to the manual. You're limited to the screen and voice control.

"Alexa - set the temperature to 69 degrees. Nice."

Easy peasy.
