Before you take a plunge on a Tesla, I strongly suggest you do some research on some of the Tesla forums to understand what you are getting yourself into.

Search for "quality"

https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/forums/model-y.304/

Tesla is known for terrible service and significant quality control problems. I went through the nightmare refusing delivery on 4 different Model Y's before finally just giving up out of exhaustion.

I'm not here to bash Tesla - RIVIAN , and the EV market in general, only exists because of what Tesla has been able to accomplish, but the issues in quality and service may be enough to just make you wait. They were for me.
I agree. I test drove a MY last month and although I enjoyed the test drive, I was surprised at the poor build quality of the showroom vehicles. I ended not placing an order because I didn't want to risk buying something that may have poor build quality and having to deal with the Tesla customer service.

If your F150 is paid for and you can afford the Y then hang onto it and get the Y or EV6 or XC40 Recharge or ID.4 and many others.

We got a EV6 as our first EV and hung onto our Tacoma. We enjoy the EV immensely but have access to a truck when needed. This is working nicely until we get our R1T sometime in 1H2023, current window is Jul-Sep 2022 but …….

Can you relay how long ago this was? I’m curious if they still have these delivery issues often today. Hope not but maybe so.

Get the Model Y and figure out if you want to keep it or trade for the R1S when that time comes. Tesla's have really good resale value and with how popular they are, you could probably sell it for more than you bought it 2 years from now.

We actually have both on order right now. Model Y should be here before June. I figured the R1S was going to be forever to actually come, considering we wanted the max pack version. So we're going to drive the Model Y around until our R1S is ready and then trade it in. First world problems, I know.

Well I see this morning the price went up another 3k. Are prices locked after I placed my preorder?

No. Expect an email telling you that prices have changed, but a new single-motor, standard range variant is now available at the same price.

I literally didn’t see the irony in this until now

I hope you can find a Y to buy. The orders for Feb was up 100% month over month.

I just drove my Model 3, this past weekend from OC to San Jose and back (about 1000 miles between the trip distance and running around while in SJ) and my supercharger cost was about $90 total. That's driving at 80~85 on I-5 most of the way.

That said, if you're driving only 40 miles/day, it may not make sense doing anything even with the price of gas (its near $6/gal in CA). I probably would ride it out doing nothing as gas price come back down.

All I can hope for is 22 to be a better year for the model Y
I think it should be. If you're lucky, you may even get one with the new 4680 battery. They also should have the AMD processor and double pane rear windows to help with cabin noise.

I went from a 2019 F150 Lariat to a 2020 Model Y. There are definitely a lot of pros to driving electric, especially gas prices. I did miss having a truck though. If you don't need a truck, then going to Model Y or a similar EV is a good call.

Honestly, I think it is unfortunately just very hit or miss. Some folks get a perfect or near perfect vehicle, others are dealing with very frustrating quality control issues.

If you are lucky, you will get a MY from the Austin factory, which is expected to have better build quality and the benefit of the 4680 cells/structural battery pack.

Like many here have said, either way, you will very likely have excellent resale value despite any quality issues just because the vehicles are in such demand and TESLA keeps raising prices.

I am the kind of person that the quality issues would drive me absolutely insane. I ended up leasing another (3rd in a row) BMW i3 (the s version) and I couldn't be happier. It is the best build quality of any car I have ever owned and as a daily driver it's stupid fun to drive, incredibly efficient, and surprisingly spacious.

The damn thing is made of carbon fiber and carbon fiber reinforced plastic. It's a supercar body in a hot hatch design and even though it doesn't have neckbreaking acceleration on paper (sub 7 second 0-60) the 0-30 acceleration is fast (sub 3 seconds) and feels even faster given how light the frame is. Before the i4 was released it was officially listed as having the fastest 0-30 time of any production BMW vehicle (including the $140K+ i8)!

Before my daughter "borrowed" my Z4M about a year ago, I was following in it my wife in our i3s. We may have accelerated briskly at a light. She won up to about 50.

I've had more than a few BMW M variants change lanes at a light to try and accelerate past me only to be frustrated that they can't beat a little hatchback off the line.
