I say get the Model Y. Just understand you will be spoiled by Tesla's Supercharger network. RAN is supposed to be built out in a similar fashion, but we are years away from it being at the same scale.

I honestly won’t drive more than 40 miles a day so 99% of the charging will be at home. But I do look forward to trying those out on whatever road trips I attempt in the future.

It really doesn't make any sense to buy an EV to save money. Think about it....even if you save on gas purchases, how long before you would potentially break even with all of the costs for the "new" car? More likely, this is an emotional purchase and if the end goal is to save money, odds are good that's not going to happen.

Of course everyone has his/her own unique situation, but in my case I'd create additional sales tax, tag and insurance costs, as well as the cost of the vehicle itself. Even at $6/gallon, it would take me about 10 years just to break even.

As much as I"d like to go electric, it's not a good financial decision for me. If I do decide to go forward with it, I will do so with the expectation of spending more money, not saving anything.

The first time you go to a gas station to get gas for the lawnmower after not needing to for six months due to your EV you'll realize how horrid the smell of petroleum products makes an EV worth every penny.

I would agree. The wait for a Rivian is much more tolerable when you are fortunate enough to be driving an EV, especially a new one! A friend just ordered a Model Y performance over the weekend and the delivery is in May.

This isn't bad advice, but I think it should be approached from a different angle. The question is, what is the cost of keeping the F-150 depreciation plus running costs (maintainence and fuel) plus any remaining car payments versus what will be the cost of the same for the Model Y.

Wow, a conundrum for sure. The Model Y would save you on gas costs the minute you took delivery. There are hard costs associated with owning and EV (buying a home charger and installing it.) At some point in time, you would need to do that for your Rivian or any BEV you buy. The Y is not even close to being an off road vehicle. I drive a M3P and love every minute of it. With the world in production chaos, shortage of supplies, who knows when we will see our vehicles. In fact, Rivian in their earnings call projected delivering 25K for the 2022 model year, far short of what they hoped. Therefore, find a vehicle you'd want to drive for the next year or two, enjoy the hell out of it and then either give it to your kids or resell it if you are still interested in a Rivian years from now. In my case, I"'m going with a Fisker or Lyriq whichever comes first.

Assuming someone places an order today, if I had to place my bets, they would get a Rivian far sooner than a Fisker, and probably sooner than a Lyriq. Except you can't even place an order for a Lyriq right now, and even if you could probably wouldn't get it until 2024 or beyond. It's anyone's guess with Fisker, but one things for sure, they aren't making 25,000 this year. I kind of wish I would have put down a preorder or two for some other vehicles, but at this point in the supply chaos Rivian is way ahead of those two.

Yes the plan is to Receive the rivian whenever that may happen and either trade the Y in for it or let my wife have the Y. Either way I think it’s what I’m going to do. I no longer use the truck for truck purposes and I’m ready to be an EV owner, even if it costs more overall.

We are in a weird / concerning world where buying that Y now and selling it in 2 years will have minimal depreciation. Tesla will raise their price on it again soon.

Before you take a plunge on a Tesla, I strongly suggest you do some research on some of the Tesla forums to understand what you are getting yourself into.

Search for "quality"

https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/forums/model-y.304/

Tesla is known for terrible service and significant quality control problems. I went through the nightmare refusing delivery on 4 different Model Y's before finally just giving up out of exhaustion.

I'm not here to bash Tesla. RIVIAN, and the EV market in general, only exists because of what Tesla has been able to accomplish, but the issues in quality and service may be enough to just make you wait. They were for me.

I had a ‘20 Tesla Model 3 LR, but traded it in on a ‘22 Volvo XC40 Recharge. The Tesla was great on trips especially with the supercharger network. The trade in offer they gave me on the Tesla was crazy, so I couldn’t pass up the deal on the Volvo since it was too good to pass up.
