I've got my Pirelli AS+3 set in hand, ready to change out, but my stock ATs still have 6-7/32 front, 5/32 rear, and 9/32 on the spare after 29k miles. I'm debating either rotate in the spare and giving them one last hoorah on a 2000 mile road trip to Eastern Montana, or give the AS+3 a chance to prove it's range-extending worth. Thoughts?

General guidance (on dry roads) is consider changing at 4/32, shop around at 3/32, and God help you at 2/32. Back home in the afternoon thunderstorms of Florida with speedy drivers, I never went below 4/32. My last rig in the PNW aged out well before hitting this. Since these trucks are a wee bit heavier than standard trucks, should we bump these numbers higher? How far have y'all safely pushed them?

FWIW, I sped around some gravel roads today and definitely felt a lot more slippage than previous treks. It could just be the extreme dry conditions.

USDOT says 2/32. It's really preference as to when you replace them. I personally would probably replace them once they get to 4 or 3/32 as 2/32 is pretty much bald.

I usually get my monies worth out of tires and run them down a bit past the wear bars. Obviously if you're taking the thing off road though, you need more tread than that.

Since it’s summer I would say ride or die on the old ATs!

I’ve been known to wear tires down far too much in the past. Way past legal in a few cases. I’d chalk it up to being ignorant as to the danger worn tires pose to you and those around you and how much of the safe operation of your vehicle is dependent on tires.

I will be changing these at the wear bars.

I tend to replace my tires as soon as one gets to the wear bar. I know everyone has different tolerance but as someone who has had friends in accidents in the rain. Replacing the vehicle is more expensive than getting 1,000-2,000 less miles on a set of tires.

I run to 2/32 but if winter is coming or any reason I need the tread then I switch them out earlier.

Seems like wear indicators are set at legal limits (2/32" for most U.S. states) rather than for usability. Some places require more, e.g. Canada. I only allow the tires to get down to wear indicators if I'm entering warmer, dryer months. You need more for rain and even more for snow driving.
