They could have standardized on a black headliner rather than do white on the base black and white interiors and black on the signature black. Maybe a change later.
Shocked they didn't do this from the get go, given that people have been very vocal about this about Tesla. I do hope the headliner for the white interior is actually white and not some beige/gray like it was for Tesla.

My current feeling is that Rivian just wanted to (understandably) get the R2 to market for 2026. The vision for it but probably won't materialize until closer to 2027-2028. I expect to see a pretty decent update in the coming years for the R2 line.

The R2 itself won’t change other than lidar and RAP1. They have had plenty of time to decide exterior colors, I could see some interior color option changes over time (especially as the black headliner is already available).

RJ has already hinted at faster charging capability coming down the line. We have also had the tri-motor heavily hinted at. So we are talking Lidar, 800v architecture (maybe), I'd imagine red canyon or something similar (every manufacturer at least offers a version of a red), hopefully different interior color choice (brown or sand, like the R3X, anyone?) and a tri-motor variant. Oh, and the rumored $45k car. Sounds like a lot is at least planned for the R2 in the future, and as it should, if it is to remain competitive and their best seller.

I think the most exciting thing is, Rivian will not sit back and coast along with the hardware once they get to high volume and firm financial grounding. It's a given the software will always be updated, but customers expect meaningful design changes with new color options over the years like legacy automakers have always done. That's a detail Tesla didn't execute well. They never really invested into this area on a proactive basis, it always seemed like oh shit...we're losing some market share so we better freshen up things a bit.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

I think Tesla thought of a vehicle like an electronic device that they’d never have to change the design of. However, even Apple learned that you have to at least make incremental changes every couple of years to differentiate one model from the next, including new color ways.

Well the $45k model is already known and the tri heavily rumored - I was thinking new items we were not aware of. I would be amazed if they went to 800v in the next few years - they would want to get the development money back on R2 before making major changes and faster charging is, per RJs recent interviews, only 10-22 times a year on road trips so saving 10 minutes was not deemed that important against cost etc.

What are you talking about? Tesla has done incremental updates more than any other manufacturer I can think of. They're constantly making small changes to their vehicles, even within a single model year they make tweaks to different components etc.

Sure internally and software wise, but externally their vehicles have looked the same for many years. The Model 3 looked the same from 2017 to 2023. That’s 6 years of the same design. They had a new paint color here and there, but that was about it. And we didn’t get the refresh in North America until 2024, so more like 7 years. In all honesty the profile of the vehicle is virtually identical to the 2017 model, minus a design area around the side cameras that leads to the door.

The Model Y was a little better with a 5 year wait to get refreshed (2020-2025), but its profile is also similarly styled to its predecessor. These long-in-the-tooth designs have allowed other companies to jump in with fresher designs and take away market share.

As RJ has mentioned form factor matters. Not everyone wants an identical vehicle the same way everyone has a nearly identical smart phone.

Especially the interiors!! Same Black and White choices since launch, and same basic design with a central screen on both 3 & Y.

So I know there was some confusion about Launch Green being a paid upgrade a while back (and I've been out of the loop to avoid going crazy for the next few months, so excuse me if this has already been posted) but Rivian.com/R2 now shows this about the launch package:

Launch Green is back
Inspired by the anti-rust coat every Rivian gets on the line, Launch Green is available for purchase with Launch Package for a limited time.
A little bummed that LE doesn't include more, especially given no RAP1 or whatever Gen3 hardware is called.

The LE also gets free autonomy, the tow package and reportedly all other paints being free. That means the package is worth over $3000 and makes sense if you don’t care about L4 autonomy sometime in 2029-2032 (if ever).

Yeah, I know. I’m gonna continue to go back and forth on it until I can actually put an order in. I like “future proofing” as much as I can and part of me hates buying a $55k item knowing there will be a better one in 6 months, but thus is life. At least I don’t get decision paralysis on everything like this.

I picked Launch Green to switch it up from my Gen 3 4Runner.

The R2 seems like a perfect vehicle to upgrade from the Gen3 4runner. Interestingly, the R2 is actually bigger then the Gen3 4runners.
