I received my R1T on 12/26/22 at the Brooklyn, N.Y. SC. There were a lot of differences to get used to coming from my last truck, a 2019 Ford F-150 Supercrew LB.

The two things I missed the most are 1) a more functional center console with a removable tray for all the small stuff I seem to accumulate. I find the tall skinny center console on the R1T to be almost useless. 2) The second feature I miss from the Ford is the bed rack. I often carry longer items like kayaks, ladders, lumber and trim, easily up to 16’ long. The Rivian cargo bars I have are great for the roof of the cab but I needed something for the bed to match that elevation.. The engineers at Rivian had to think about this issue at some point. It just seems so obvious.

After searching in vain for 6 months I decided to modify the mounting system of the TracRac I had from the Ford. I wanted to keep it simple if possible but also functional and look good. The method I came up with only required two 3/8” holes to be drilled at each base located over the bed cargo bar anchor loops. This allowed me to use 3/8” galvanized u-bolts from 4 heavy duty cable clamps I had on hand. The u-bolts were long enough to allow me to fabricate 1/4” thick fish plates at each location to further distribute the load. The height of the bed rack is a little higher than the cargo bars on the cab, but it seemed to work very good with the 3 kayaks we took along on a recent trip of over 800 miles to Maine at the end of June.

The rack worked better than I expected and was easy to load/unload. The original TracRac cost was less than $350. I feel good about making it work on my R1T and keeping it simple.

Respect for your clean solution here for not a lot of cash. I'd be worried about hauling anything heavier without a plate running the fully length of the bed but for a pair of Kayaks partially supported on the roof I am sure it is fine.

In addition to the options @Phatman113 pointed to the DCE mounting brackets are very robust, I am using four of them to hold my 400lbs camper on my truck and the thing is rock solid. Of course 4 of them would cost the same as your whole rack setup.

Thanks for the links to Overland. They were the one and only source I found for a Rivian bed rack, but when I went to their website in June they did not have a listing for Rivian. I am sure all of that is evolving as more trucks are produced. One thing I did not cover in the original post was that all of the bed rail push buttons are accessible and fully functional with the TracRac installed. Because of the materials and configuration of the bed rails on the F-150 and the R1T, I have a better feeling about this installation on the R1T. Anyone familiar with the mounting clamps on the TracRac system and the assembly configuration of the plastic bedrail cap on the F-150 could understand. Thank you.

Hey Warren, Thanks for doing this install. I'm thinking of doing the same on mine but wanted to clarify how the buttons work, it looks like they are hidden under the rail. Do you have just enough space to squeeze a finger under there?

Still happy with the set up?

Same rack, but different installation method...

Rivian R1T R1S Custom modified bed rack for my Rivian R1T PXL_20250117_163130347

TracONE Bed Rack
$294 @ Home Depot
Identical to $700 Thule model except for decals and top bracket inserts. I took the stickers off for a cleaner look. 800 lb. capacity.

Mounting Clamps
$37 @ Amazon
These are designed for Toyota Tacoma and work well with the R1T flush sides, fitting into the tonneau slot. Little adhesive pads that came with the clamps prevent scratching of the racks or Rivian.

1/4" Rubber Sheet
$15 @ Lowes
To accommodate the protrusion of the Rivian mounting points above the plane of the bed rails. I cut this into 4 strips, using the thin rubber pieces from the roof rack as a template.

The racks don't completely cover any of the buttons for the gear tunnel doors or tailgate.

Anyway, I'm really happy with how it has turned out. Even without anchoring to the Rivian connection points, the rack is super solid and sturdy. I feel ready for a run for lumber or to throw my camping rooftop box or overland basket up there.

This install does not require modification to the racks or the truck.

The cross bars sit about 8.5" above the cab roof. If I want to make them line up with a roof rack, I figure I can do a little trig then cut and re-tap the aluminum uprights to the perfect length. Not sure at this point if I will adapt my existing Thule roof rack ($200), buy Rivian OEM crossbars ($800), or just go without ($0).

I have some black M10 bolts I may swap out on the clamps for a cleaner look.

Thanks for the write up! I nearly bought the Thule ones for $200 on Marketplace but didn't want to drive an hour to get them. Didn't realize the others were the same, good to know!
