I can almost guarantee that R1S is not in the high suspension setting.
skip to the R1T going over the gap at ~40 seconds in

I really like the air suspension that's what makes the R1 the swiss army Knife of trucks. If they did another truck say the R2 sure make it more basic but to have an R1 with coils would cheapen the lot of R1's in my opinion.
I agree with this. Although I mostly drive around in all purpose, having a sport and offroad mode are one of the biggest features of this truck.

Also, without the hydraulic roll control I would assume this 7k truck would drive like a mess. It is so planted for how heavy it is.

Articulation is fine in an R1. Look at the video Dark-Fx posted where they show one driving over rocks and watch the heads of the occupants. Plenty stable and smooth, given what they're going over.

I've spent plenty of hours in high setting in a Defender. I didn't find it to be appreciably worse than anything else I've ever done the same offroading in. I do think the Rivian has a better all-around ride than the Defender in every offroad setting/situation I've thrown at it.

I think the point/argument some here are making (including myself) is that the 'compromises' of having air suspension are significantly less meaningful than the 'compromises' of having a coil suspension. Loss of range, loss of modes, worse on-road performance, worse towing, no camp level, no ride level, etc etc etc vastly outweigh the, so far, two 'compromises' of 'it might fail' and 'it might be jerky in high while offroading'.

This one, that one and the other one.

I love my air suspension. The adjustable height combined with amazing ride quality are just two of my must haves. One of the things that turned me off of the Ford, Model 3 and even the Lucid, were that they lacked air suspension.

This is a bit of a repeat, but I’m squarely in the camp of valuing the Rivian air suspension’s capabilities, adjustment, and technical advancement. Like others here, on the same outing I may rip asphalt, bash snow, and go mall crawling or out to dinner with the family. Next season it will be a heavy boat tow over 8k’ of elevation changes and mild off-road. It’s one of the primary reasons to pay a premium for this rig.

I have had three trucks and SUV’s with air suspension, this is most refined by a far margin. If it goes sideways then Rivian will get the vehicle to repair under a generous warranty.

Our classic RR P38 is known as one of the most finicky rigs made and has air suspension. Many replaced it with coils instead of fussing with keeping the air operating properly after warranty. Many regret doing so as the coils are a lesser quality ride, let alone less versatile. Gotta believe a coil sprung 7k vehicle would have its own limitations including needing new springs down the road.

YMMV.

I want one, though I like all the complexity of suspension and motors. Just don't like the built-in nav crap. These things work better in traditional cars IMO. Give me Android auto, traditional proximity key etc.
