The R1's look terribly under tired without the 20's (tyred for any Bits out there) and the extra 1" in tire height and extra 1" in tire width make the vehicle look less Bambi like. The improvement in ride is noticeable when the road is rough. Tire noise is greater with the more aggressive tread though. It is an adventure vehicle after all.

You don't like this look, lol? I just don't get why anybody would want to do this or think it's attractive, but to each his own......

And maybe 10% of owners are actually going to do anything remotely considered serious off-road. It’s no different than a Defender, G-Wagen, or BMW GS bikes. They’re built, capable and marketed as being off-roaders and rarely see dirt roads.
I am guessing it is more like 40-50% use the Rivians off road and not just for speed bumps )) If not, why not just buy a a cheaper Tesla or? The expendive price for the Rivian is due to the amazingly high performance, huge horsepower, AWD and serious tech for off roading. Doesn’t have to be rock crawling but many are buying it for the off road purpose or going to the snow.

Because a Tesla cannot go 420 miles on a full charge.

Neither can a Rivian......

Still farther than a Tesla but. ?

My take on the whole thing: The AT package is not necessary unless you're doing highly technical trails (like rock crawling). While I'm sure many Rivian owners do go off road, I'm sure very few go on anything anywhere near technical enough to warrant the AT equipment.

I think most people that want the AT package want it for the appearance, they think they need it when really they don't, or both. Much like wranglers. Built with tons of off-road capabilities. But most don't take it off road. They buy it because of the appearance and ethos. All that being said - appearance is a perfectly a valid reason to buy it. People try ALL THE TIME to justify why they need X car.. the reality is 9/10 nobody ever NEEDS the capabilities. People get what they get because they want it. And that's JUST FINE

TL;DR - I think a lot of people underestimate what the vehicle can do without the all-terrain package. I'm sure that there are those that like the way that it looks better which is great. I personally don't feel like don't all terrain Wheels look any better or worse than the 22" options. But that's subjective

end rant ?

all good until they get stuck with the low performance tires and need a huge tow truck and a box of cash to get them out. having said that, this is what makes the world go around ! different opinions, needs and wants. my 835 hp Quad worked perfectly on trails where my Jeeps worked very hard. In fact, the R1S with the ATs did not even sweat. that kind of safety and performance was worth it for me

Well at least they are capable, unlike all the other cars and station wagons that are marketed as SUV's but lack any sort of utility or off road ability.
Should an adventure vehicle not be capable of adventuring? The AT package is the most versatile.

I traded a Tesla for the R1T because we "needed" a truck. Need is ill defined, but not having one was certainly changing the way we live and want to live. I tried the logical thing of not having one for many years, and just the Tesla. So yes, I'm "wasting" its capabilities 90% of the time, but at least not wasting gas on a 17 MPG truck.

I have a R1T with 20”AT. In the past have had damage from going over thrown retreads so like the security of the shield. I fish off beaches so like the more aggressive tread. I do double track and go through an occasionally flooded dirt road to get to the hunting camp. Yes use is around 10% or less but getting stuck on those occasions with a rising tide or in deep snow or baby powder sand makes the capabilities of the AT package worth every penny. BTW I have the dual motor large which is marketed as moderate off-road which is what I do. No rock crawling. I find the noise from the perillis very acceptable even on superslab. I think of the vehicle as having ~280m of range and havent had gotten nearly to that limit. Just wish the Tesla charging units get to me sooner as the Rivian network is deficient and the others expensive and often slow.
