This was a very interesting thread that I'm resurrecting from 1+ years ago.

First, thanks to all who contributed - I learned a lot. I really like the idea of hitch mounted winch, although at this point in my life I'm a little reluctant to wrestle with a 70 lb winch when it comes time to mount it. Although I'm not sure I need a 12,000 lb winch to get the truck out of some snow or sand. So maybe there is a lighter solution even if it won't get me unstuck from truly challenging situations (which I tend to avoid anyway unless I'm with a group).

As to how to winch a vehicle in the opposite direction from the mount (i.e., use a rear mount winch to move the vehicle forward) there is this method:



Note: I've never actually tried this.

It does require a few snatch blocks etc (not to mention more than one tree), and it's not exactly intuitive, but it's an interesting method that would make for a good undergrad problem in engineering mechanics. :)
