We've got an R1S that is a great great car for hauling kids and everyday driving. But I've also got a ModelY and I use the "FSD" (quotes intentional) a LOT. Yes, it's not 100% but it's FAR FAR better than anything else I've experienced from any other manufacturer. (And it's a 2020 model so not even the most up-to-date FSD hardware). So yeah, I just don't think I can give it up yet.

But does anybody 'in the know' have a better sense for what Rivian's future in this area might look like?

Tesla's currently offering a transfer of my FSD to a new ModelY if I order it by end-of-month so I'm torn between just doing that and living in TeslaLand for a few more years or hoping that Rivian will make some big advances in the next year or so.

Any (semi-well-informed) thoughts would be appreciated!

Read up on Rivian's Autonomy page (rivian.com/autonomy)
Yeah, familiar with that but it totally doesn't touch on the ability to do point-to-point driving the way Tesla does. It doesn't make autonomous turns or even (I believe) deal with stop signs or traffic lights.

Rivian doesn't have "FSD", and doesn't claim to have that either.

Rivian currently has some level of autonomy and driver's assistance. Those current features are described at the URL @VandalSibs posted: https://stories.rivian.com/autonomy

What you are asking about is something that is in the future plans for Rivian, but is not promised for any specific time period. Some people expect it to come sooner than later, but no promises from Rivian. But I think they've been clear that "FSD" is not coming in the next few months, nor probably in the next year. The big steps won't start coming IMO until the next gen hardware (RAP and lidar), which isn't scheduled until early 2027.

You can view the Autonomy Day presentation to get some idea of the plans for the future.

They describe the steps they plan to take along the way, so don't go expecting to get the the end of the path without hitting those milestones first.

Fair enough. I know Scaringe said (at least according to this article: https://www.reuters.com/business/au...ip-2500-driver-assistance-package-2025-12-11/) that they expected to roll out point-to-point autonomous driving and "eyes-off" functionality in 2026. But 'roll out' may not necessarily mean for the general public yet.

Rivian demonstrated point-to-point during the autonomy day presentation, but it still obviously has a ways to go before they'd be comfortable dropping that into genpop vehicles. They really haven't said anything about the timeline since then as far as I know.

Don’t hold your breath. Rivian is YEARS behind Tesla in self driving. Videos on YouTube of 2025 Model 3s on the latest software driving point to point and parking in a parking space with zero driver input is something Rivian hasn’t even demoed with their future tech.

It does not stop at stop signs. I had two Teslas and DO miss the FSD.
