I am currently at 52,800 miles in my 2023 Quad R1S (Laika) and I am based in Florida. I am researching the extended warranty options, using Gemini for analysis. Like everyone else it seems, I am narrowed down to Xcare. My intention was to start the policy between 57-58k miles on the odometer as I have little interest in duplicate coverage and it appears the price for the policy will go up at 58k miles based on my research with the online pricing tool. That and the fact there is a 1000 mile waiting period for the coverage to begin after purchase makes just under 58k miles the sweet spot in my mind.

I have narrowed down to a 6 year/100k mile warranty for $8817 if started at or below 57.9k miles. This matches the miles to my driving habits and I should come in right around 6 years. I can not own this car without a warranty…I see more expensive repairs in the future…especially with the suspension…the Achilles heel of the Gen 1s.

Well, I have been playing with the online tool and I have gone far enough with it that I gave them my contact info. I have been contacted by a rep who has offered me an 18 month zero interest payment plan (website only offers 12 month) that he says will gop away soon and after I stated my intention to wait also offered up that Xcare plans to increase the price of the Rivian plans due to more payouts for suspension issues than what they have collected on all Rivian premiums. I would usually be hesitant to believe that but with my experience so far I could see it being true.

So now I am reanalyzing waiting versus going forward now with a couple thousands more miles lost to duplicate coverage. I am sure many other people with Gen1s are getting close to needing an extended warranty too. I am curious what everyone’s thinking is. Do you go forward now, a little earlier than intended, to insure the current price or wait and see what happens. Does anyone have another option they are considering? Just want to make the best decision as possible!

It’s a tough spot for us Gen 1 owners (and I suspect Gen 2 eventually).

On the one hand, it’s highly likely something will break on our cars that will require large payment to fix.

On the other hand, insurance/warranty companies will always collect more than they pay out, to be a viable business, which means consumers will ultimately be paying a bit more than the average actual cost to fix our cars. Peace of mind premium.

Before xcare had enough data, Rivian owners had the advantage. Now, I’m not so sure. Hard to say at what price the extended warranty doesn’t become worth it…

About to purchase xcare and was told the same thing about increases. I’m at 47k miles and will purchase in the coming days. Will have over 10k in overlap since my rivian warranty expires at 60k but I don’t want to chance it with likely price increases coming. Plus it also jumps if I purchase at 50.5k miles

Forgot to mention that the price I quoted above was for a zero deductible plan. Hate to be a pessimist but I think I will have enough visits that a zero deductible will pay for itself.

Also, since I got my car pre price increase I feel I have room to add the warranty for peace of mind.

If a repair costs more than the $8817 or cumulative repairs across a few visits costs more than the $8817, is xcare covering it?

Great to know. I’m at 43k miles on my Feb 23 R1T. I’ve been planning to wait too, but now with this info I need to reevaluate, soon!

They way I read the coverage, they will not cover a repair if the repair is more than the value of the vehicle at that time. Not sure what method they use to determine value…keep in mind, they have to have some risk too, otherwise you could just hold on to your money and spend the premium yourself.

Any insurance folks on here who can dig deeper?

I have heard that 100s of times. If this was a Chevy Colorado I would totally agree with you. It’s not. It’s going to be expensive to fix and I am confident it will need repairs. The suspension really spooks me.

I have only purchased extended warranties on vehicles with either new tech (2017 Volvo XC90 T8) or known to have expensive repairs (2025 AMG GLE 53). In my R1Ss case, both are true.

I just do not see the markets returning enough to cover the potential. Just my $.02. To each their own.

Since many of us are nearing the end of the factory warranty term I really wanted to start a discussion on options for an extended warranty if you are leaning that way. While save your money is a valid option I am more interested in the path those who decide to pursue the EW or VSC take.

I did the same analysis as you and purchased the same 6k/100k warranty. I did $100 deductible for $8372. did the 18 month, etc. one thing missing from your analysis is that it gets more expensive the closer you get to 60k. the warranty is cheaper at 55k than 59k which makes sense.

This is what I got. It was offered to me during a refinancing via Gravity Lending and Vantage West Credit Union. The actual service provider is called Synergy Administrators, (844) 237-3498. I don't know how they handle buying it without the financing. My Gravity contact is: Jackson Walker, [email protected], 512-881-5248.

All the EV's we have owned have really only had suspension problems, and minor interior issues.
2 cars with over 300k and one at 190k.

It's a different world with the things that fail on EV's. Batteries and motors tend to do well. That is why I never purchased outside post warranty coverage. The amount was about the same as replacing the four corners of suspension each 1.5 times. Did the failures happen yes, but the cost of paying for something one never uses is kind of annoying. Yet that is why many use insurance. For the not expected. In our case it was expected. So self insured.

I just purchased Rivian Care for 5yrs/200K miles. Essentially takes me out to 9.5 years of covered ownership. Definitely worth the piece of mind.

Xcare is not available in Calif.
I’m in CA and it’s true you can’t purchase xcare in CA but it does function here. you initially need a non CA address to sign up, but once active it’s all good (and you can move your address to CA.).
