So i've seen a lot of posts on the value of the PPF film, in particular the X-PEL version of the film, and i was wondering which is better for long term return on investment, the XPEL PPF versus having the Camp Kitchen. Both seem to cost around similar price, $5-6k, but which creates that longer term ROI? At present, those who were preorder holders like myself who had camp kitchen configured are on the plus side of value given the new pricing for the camp kitchen. Now how that incremental advantage plays out over the years in terms of depreciation versus the long term benefits of PPF protection is what i'm trying to figure out. Where would you put your $5-6k if you could only put it into either the PPF or the Camp Kitchen if you only had the $5-6k extra to spend and why?

I think the camp kitchen will hold value better. XPel isn't really going to give you that much of a value savings imo.

If I had to choose between the two I'd be choosing based on usefulness. I'd rather have the kitchen and a scratched up truck than a pristine truck with no kitchen.

Nobody truly needs an $80K vehicle. So, I reject this whole ROI thingy. It's not a true investment ... full stop. A $45K truck will sit in traffic just as well as an $80k + truck will.

That said, if you are sure you would make good use of the Camp Kitchen AND have pre-order pricing, that would seem the better path. That and an Xpel full wrap is more like 8K near me.

It poses the question: What’s the mission of your Rivian? The two options seem like mission opposites: Garage queens get Xpel wrapped. Off-road rash is going to show on the wrap and/or on the paint job underneath.

Garage queens don’t need a camp kitchen…

If it's for resale, just offload the truck as soon as you get it.

If you trade in the truck or sell it to Carvana, vroom, etc then no one will care that it has PPF on it. I’m guessing camp kitchen will be the same thing for getting rid of the truck via trade in, etc. if you find the right buyer who finds those items valuable then they might hold a little value. Long story short, do what you will use and expect $0 return on “accessories”.

Unless you are flipping it, a Rivian isn't an investment.

You aren't going to get money back on PPF when you go to sell and the ramp kitchen isn't going to matter to anyone because they can always add it if they want it.

Just buy what you like and use it.

For a true IAV* you are going to need full PPF, Camp Kitchen and maybe a Kayak on top.

My take: neither
1. On the camp kitchen. It looks AWESOME. I would love it, buuuuut it is crazy expensive for what it is. You can buy a good induction burner that you plug in to the truck for like $100. I really like the concept, but the markup on it is nuts. Plus, I wouldn't use it enough to justify it. That said, if I car camped 50 days a year I would consider it, because the value becomes much higher. I just don't car camp that much.

2. I won't wrap my car for a bunch of reasons
- My car will be on dusty roads and forest roads a lot, so will be dirty a lot of the time
- I won't clean it often enough that it will look perfect regardless of the paint quality
- when I do clean it, and try and fix any problems it is easier to use touch up paint on a rock chip in paint than it is to handle chips in a wrap (you have to rewrap for that)
- I know myself, I would not be diligent about removing the wrap at its end of life and I have seen horror stories of wraps that have been left on too long
tl;dr - for me it is cheaper / easier to repair the paint once every 5-10 years than it is to wrap it, and I won't keep it clean enough in between then for the difference to be readily noticeable.

If you are wondering if you need the camp kitchen, you don’t need it. While I think it’s neat and would love to have it, realistically I would use it a handful of times. And no guarantee it will fit future Rivian models.

I chose neither. My current plan, always subject to change, is to PPF the front end because driving on the freeway, especially in the winter, means flying little sharp rocks. I also plan on expel PRIME XR PLUS on the roof just because I hate getting into a roasting car.
