Paying 60k for A car and complaining about $400. Priceless…….i get one for “free”. I ❤ NY
I look at it the complete opposite way. Paying $60k for a car and not getting a charging unit included with it is a joke.

Imagine buying any appliance or an electronic device and it not coming with a power adapter or cord to power it. That’s asinine. For me, it’s not about the dollar amount, it’s the principle. Auto manufacturers should include a mobile or wall charger with the purchase of an EV.

Don't forget spare tire. This will be my first car to buy that doesn't come with a spare. :(

You would set the amperage in the vehicle itself.

The Rivian portable charger is quite good, but if you need compatibility with a lot of weird/less common outlets, the Tesla Mobile charger with it numerous 1st and 3rd party pigtails is worth it. If you don't want to give money to Tesla, you can find good used ones in many places.

Is the 30amp outlet you are talking about a TT-30 (RV) outlet? If so, I very much recommend going the Tesla Mobile route, since there's a great 3rd party pigtails for just that purpose: https://evseadapters.com/products/tt-30-adapter-for-tesla-model-s-x-3-gen-2?variant=45481215950905
Is setting the charging amperage on the car itself cumbersome, or very quick? Do you need Wi-Fi for that, or does the phone connect via Bluetooth? On the Lectron portable charger, it's a quick button press.

In 3.5 years, I have never used it. I did give it to family while they were getting their charger installed after buying a new Tesla. If you don't have regular use for it, skip it and buy something inexpensive.

Free in these states: CA, CO, DC, DE, MA, MD, NJ, NM, NY, OR, RI, VT, and WA.
Wait! I purchased a 2026 via Reno Rivian (well, really through the internet), but I live in Truckee, CA. Picked it up in Sacramento because it is CA-registered. I did NOT get the Rivian portable charger included. Is there a requirement/law that says Rivian must include it with the above-mentioned states? I, too, want to pick one up for those "emergency" situations, but if I should have received one for free, I'd like to request it.

This only applies to R2.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I already plan to upgrade my garage with the Tesla Universal Wall changer over the Rivian wall charger because of lower cost and features. I was going to get the Rivian portable charger with the R2 in the meantime, but it's $400 when inexpensive alternatives are available. Is the Rivian portable charge worth it when the Tesla mobile charge is only $300 on Amazon? The money saved can go to pay for the paint. ;)

I think there’s some loophole in receiving free charging equipment if you live in select states. I saw it on Travis Ketchum’s YouTube channel. Ohio wasn’t one of the states, of course.

Me too. I've been driving EV for four years; first car came with a portable charger and adaptors. It sits in the frunk of the Audi and has never been used. 26 R1T NACS came with an adaptor that allowed us to use the already installed Charge Point L2. I don't have a use case for a portable charger.

You can only set it in the vehicle, not on the portable charger, nor on the vehicle app (the latter is an oft-requested feature.) there's a spot right on the charging screen in the vehicle where you can change the amps.

Rivian R1T R1S R2 Rivian Portable Charger for $400? 54767

I think it remembers based on location, but I could be wrong about that.

How many here live in a bubble and is completely unaware of inflation? That inflation affects manufacturing too. If you were in business of making and selling products, and facing rising costs, but want to avoid raising prices… what options do you have at your disposal? You reduce what is included, especially things that majority of customers do not find to be essential. And you sell those items separately as options, in lower quantities. Thus reducing your business costs to make or procure them. Some OEM make you pay for a frunk tub. Others make you pay for a portable charger. Shouldn’t be difficult to understand if you think about what business decisions you might have to make if it was your own business and rear end on the line. The chargers may cost Rivian $200 each. While that isn’t high, but multiply by planned R2 production of 50k. $10,000,000 is obviously no chump change. No one is maliciously trying to pry you of $400 for a charger or short you one. They are just trying to keep the R2 at a specific price point AND operate a sustainable business.

How do you handle charging from a 30a outlet using the Rivian charger plus an adapter? You can't set charging speed on the Rivian portable charger, as far as I understand.
You set the charge rate in the vehicle before you start the charge.

In the rest of the world the cord is with the car, not in the charged.
