I'm reposting an email I just sent to Rivian about a charging session I had yesterday at a Tesla SC where I was using the Tesla app. I have only had my used 2025 R1S for about a month so I am new to chargin the Rivian, or even paying for charging for that matter, but what happened here seems very strange and even a bit shady. Have a read and let me know if any of you have experienced this?

------------
Hi-

Something very wrong happened here. I am a Tesla owner as well (free lifetime charging for a Model X) and have a Tesla account setup for charging my Rivian. I arrived at this charger with my Rivian, went into my Tesla app, selected charging a non-Tesla Vehicle, selected the charger (1D in this case), and then plugged in the vehicle, verified it was charging and then went to a store and came back when it was charged and drove away. My Tesla app even indicated that this was a discounted charging time, $0.3x/kWh at the time I was charging.

Somehow you (Rivian) took over this charging session (how is this even possible?) and instead charged me more than double the kWh price? I don’t understand how this even happened, but I need to get refunded for this as I never authorized you to bill me or control my charging at Tesla Superchargers. I have charged at many SCs before with this Rivian and never had this happen. If I’m not able to prevent this in the future I would like to remove my charging account with you for this vehicle. I don’t use Rivian chargers (except once to just try it) and don’t want you to interfere with my Tesla-based charging like this.

Thanks,
Colby
I deleted my credit card infomation from the Rivian app so this doesn't happen.. I got burned the first time I used a Tesla charger (newbie). After that first time I just deleted my card info.. now I have no problems.

How do you charge at RAN stations if you have no credit card in the app...I assume you pay on the screen and don't get to "plug and charge" at RAN?

You forfeit ability to plug-and-charge. You tap to pay. Since RAN has small coverage, this is probably not a big compromise for many.

This might keep you from getting the Rivian-owner's rate at a RAN. Would need to be tested though.

Possible. And ditto on testing how it behave. Maybe those with more granular knowledge of how RAN's backend works can chime in.

IIRC, the screen at the dispenser tells you to "plug-in your Rivian". So I would think, even though valid form of payment is not found, it should still have checked and know that it's plugged into a Rivian.

I encountered a similar problem at the Raton, NM supercharger in March. Initiated the charge using the Tesla app, plugged in but Tesla didn't start the charge. Then after a few seconds it kicked over to Rivian billing. I stopped charging and retried a couple of times. Then I tried a few different pedestals, working my way down the line. The problem persisted on all Post 3 (A, B, C, D) connections. Worked correctly once I hit Post 2D.

My takeaway was that it was a problem on Tesla's side and that if I encounter it again, I'll try a different pedestal and not assume it is a site-wide or Rivian problem. Now I always watch the Tesla app to make sure charging has actually started and is billing inside the Tesla app before walking away.

To summarize.

start the session via the Tesla(other vendor) app.

Once prompted to plug in, wait a couple of seconds.

plug in

Verify the session started in the Riv and more importantly in the Tesla app.

The session did not start in the app. Stop the session and try again. You may need to move to a different stall.

To fully avoid being charged by Rivian, remove your cc from your Riv account. Make sure to read what this impacts, aside from the plug and charge process.

Lastly, send Riv feedback to allow for the PnC to be disabled or enabled in the app.
