In the recent Reddit AMA, Wassym talked about how R2 infotainment is actually 1 generation ahead of R1. New infotainment available at launch. R2 will eventually be able to run local AI models for Rivian Assistant.

WassymRivian: R2 takes the technology platform to the next level, and comes with a higher infotainment performance compared to R1 Gen 2 (Rivian will be the first to launch this new infotainment compute in North America).
WassymRivian: Honestly, it's the edge compute story for me. I don't think it's being talked about enough. R2's infotainment chip has about 200 sparse TOPs and is capable of running a local AI model, on the vehicle itself. Rivian Assistant, multi-modal awareness using the cameras and sensors, richer graphics – will eventually work when you're offline in the middle of nowhere. Which when you're a Rivian owner, is kind of the point.

But here's what I really want people to internalize: this compounds. We own the full software stack down to the motors, suspension, and thermal management. The R2 vehicle you drive home is the least capable version you'll ever own, and it will continue getting better. That's not a feature, it's the architecture
WassymRivian: R2 will have iHeart Digital Radio at launch. We have Amazon Music coming soon, and YouTube Music right after. We will continue to expand our media portfolio on R1 and R2.

I'm "only" 62, but the first four cars I drove only had AM radios. It wasn't until I bought my first car on my own (an '86 Chevy Blazer) that I had FM. Technology changes...I never expected the manufacturers of my earlier cars to give me a new radio just because the newer models of the car came with FM or a cassette player.

Me at the support group meeting: "Hi, my name is Ian and I am a R1 owner."

Seriously, I couldn't be happier for the next gen Rivians! Go R2!

I'm just a few years younger than you but I'll have to disagree. When a car manufacture markets their vechicles with promised of future mprovements and features through OTAs I expect just that. I'm pretty happy with how our G2 R1S has improved. Not at all happy with our Sierra EV. Haven't received a single meaningful OTA since nearly a year of ownership.

The premium audio in our R1S is much better than when delivered. If the R2 has a better sounding system so be it. If Rivian can continue to improve the G1 and G2 R1s then they should.
