Just a note that the keyboard lock is an implementation decision made by the automaker. They choose when to lock the keyboard, or whether to lock it at all. Some automakers decide to leave it fully unlocked, like Audi, VW, Hyundai, and others. This may change based on model year.
BMW's keyboard is unlocked on their native system, but not on CarPlay so how does what you say make sense?

I’m not sure, you’ll have to ask BMW. Seems silly to me.

Here’s some recent CarPlay documentation that highlights how the automaker decides to restrict keyboard access and list lengths. Check page 47:

https://developer.apple.com/download/files/CarPlay-Developer-Guide.pdf

“iOS automatically disables the keyboard and reduces list lengths when the car indicates it should do so.”

That's what AA/CP are. Apple and Google make SDKs and there are untold hundreds of thousands of developers working on apps for Android and iOS and adding the necessary bits to support AA/CP. Every single one of those apps then works in any car with developers needing to do precisely zero extra work.

Given the small user population absolutely no company would have their developers invest in implementing with Rivian's SDK. It just doesn't make any financial sense.
Rivian's sdk Is not "Rivian". Go Google Android Automotive. That's what's running in there. Linux powers endless things we don't think about. Little know fact, Audis ran qnx, aka blackberry os, for years.

Rivian does not allow anyone to write apps for the car. They base their system on Android Automotive but it is more restrictive than Android Automotive. And if they ever do allow others to write apps for their infotainment system then you will absolutely have to use Rivian's toolchain and SDK rather than Android Automotive.

Oh so you are just here to dig up Carplay threads and sew division. Bye.

Wow these pictures really tell the tale of what an obtrusive, awful mess CarPlay is. (Not as awful as Apple Intelligence, but very close. ) So glad Rivian, GM, VW, Tesla have all jettisoned this. I guess the Financial Times was right yesterday as well: CP Ultra is dead.
Choosing a destination at leasure on my AA , walking to my car, and seamlessly connecting and driving off route integrated isn't a terrible thing....

Did I just read correctly that one cannot load a USB with songs and play it in a Rivian? I'm new to the brand and have an R2 reservation.

Since it's 2026 and not 1999, yes, that's correct.

Even funnier that people have the drive to post about those OTHER people who won't let it go.
Those other people come here to complain about something a product has said for half a decade that it won't support. Definitely a sane behavior.

New cars still have USB-C commonly. I'll head to a Rivian dealer as a newbie and see if some questions can be answered. This is not critique but curiosity. Many enjoy playing high quality audio outside of streaming (and Bluetooth).

Slightly more sane than whining about those posts, which have been happening for half a decade.

As do Rivians, a lot of them. You seem to assume that they can play media just because they exist.

Wholey disagree, especially the people that don't even own a Rivian and just come here with an opinion that's pretty irrelevant. And especially the people who can't even purchase a Rivian.
