Well, that would require a complete redesign of the back end, since the R3 shown so far doesn't have a split tailgate like the R1S, it has an upward-opening rear hatch that has separate-open rear glass like my old late '90s Ford Explorer had.

Interesting patent for a R3X cargo area extension. Great idea for extra hauling ability.
It's just a frickin' patent, not a promise of a feature specifically for the R3X or for any other Rivian model. The illustrations are a *required* element of the patent. It would actually be stupid to tie the patent to a specific vehicle model because that would narrow the scope of the patent. To illustrate the patentable concept they started with some existing CAD files they had on hand (because doing so saves work and doesn't infringe on anyone else's vehicle design), then they stripped out details for clarity. Do you expect them to design a completely new vehicle just to illustrate the patent? If they did that then this thread would have been about the ugly new concept car that Rivian accidentally leaked in the patent application ...

Now that you've make this claim about an upcoming "R3X feature" it's going to live forever and there are going to be dozens of threads years in the future claiming that Rivian "promised" this feature on the R3X ...

Well, that would require a complete redesign of the back end, since the R3 shown so far doesn't have a split tailgate
It would also require a complete redesign because the "R3" shown in the illustration doesn't have any frickin' DOORS. Sheesh ...

The assumption is all R3Xs we've seen are pre-production/prototypes. A lot of things can change prior to going to market.

I think they buried the lede here. You'll actually be able to remove the doors of the R3X like a Wrangler or Bronco. I am sure they are making this change, maybe as an OTA update for the R1S too since you said it might not exclusively be for the R3X...

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

That’s neat, but it defeats the purpose of the flip glass. I used to own a Honda Fit and it definitely lived up to its name. I can’t tell you how many totes and IKEA purchases I fit in there. I even put an entire 3-seat couch in there, including the cushions, and I was still able to close the hatch! I miss that car.

Honda really dropped the ball not making a proper Fit EV and I’m not talking about that compliance car that had under 100 miles of range. Instead they replaced it with the HR-V in the US, which is just another friggin’ crossover that burns more gas. GTFO.

I’d be more concerned about dust being sucked into the cabin and settling in all nooks and crannies… than “exhaust”. While in motion, the cabin is a vacuum—having lower pressure than the air outside. This is an impractical idea. And like most patents, it won’t go anywhere. Unless, there is a secondary tailgate to reseal the cabin. But at that point, why not just use a hitch-mounted cargo basket, which Yakima and other brands already make?

Silly engineers, they always assume people will, for instance, buy the extension walls, take the time to install them temporarily, ensure they are latched securely according the detail instruction manual before loading any cargo -- rather than simply throw it in the back and tell junior to hold onto it. ;)
