I find it mind boggling that Rivian pulled FM/HD radio from the R2. I wonder what the "savings" was? Without an internet connection and media stored locally on your phone, you are SOL. I wonder how far along congress is on mandating AM radio? They must be getting some revenue stream from the "free" partners that they offer without a paid Connect+ subscription.

FM radio processing has been included in microprocessors for a long time. A lot of cell phones even have it on chip but don't actually enable it by having an antenna. I'm guessing this new compute stack that's starting with R2 doesn't have anything they could use for it, since it's starting to go by the wayside with better technologies happening.

Apologies for the newbie question but I couldn't find anything in the user manual about recording the cameras. Could this be the "future use" of the USB-C in the center glovebox? Or did I simply miss it elsewhere?
If it’s anything like R1, Gear Guard recordings are saved to internal storage, and can be transferred to external USB-C storage for viewing/transfer elsewhere. 4 year old video on GG:

As for Road Cam: https://stories.rivian.com/software-update-2023-14-0
There were some gear guard functions in my demo unit, but it seemed less than the R1 and I didn't really pay attention to it when I was clicking through everything.
@RivianTrackr has a video that runs through all of the software, but it doesn't look like Drive Cam is a thing in R2... (7:18 mark for Gear Guard)

It's all streamed over the internet. FM radio was playing when I got in my demo but I ended up turning the radio off entirely.

Have any of you all noticed that there is no mention of the side view mirrors tilting down when going into reverse? I've searched through the manual high and low and asked around to no avail.

Wait, what?

I didn't even think to ask about that. Never even crossed my mind, just assumed it would have it. I assume not everyone has a local news/weather/traffic station in their area. But where I am, it's the first thing I turn on every time I sit in any vehicle. I don't care that I could probably find it on Tune-In or steaming or whatever. Does *everything* need to be streaming, these days? 😡

Now get off my lawn. #old_man_shakes_fist_at_sky 🤣

I didn't even notice it wasn't actual radio. It was still my local stations. My only concern is around those specialized FM stations that you need in specific areas about traffic events. But I almost never need them anyway.

Honestly, I might be in a better situation with streaming. My commute tends to require me to switch between stations because the radio strength is such that some of the FM stations I listen to don't make it to my car anymore. Happens in both directions.

Don't most metro news networks have simulcast on the internet? that you could stream from your phone via Bluetooth (TV station's app or webpage)? And both iOS and Android have native weather apps. Plus, Rivian Assistant will have weather through a future update (allegedly). And yah, everything is streamed because it's another way to push ads to you and track your habits, to push more ads to you. Money. Money. It's what makes the world go round. Radio is one way, no ad tracking possible.

To keep basic functionality, simply stay in good cell phone coverage zones. Standard adventure vehicle stuff.

I actually kind of consider it a safety issue. Maybe just carry a portable AM/FM radio or something. In case either
A. You're outside of cell reception but still want weather/traffic data etc
B. Something goes wrong, cyberattack or something on internet infra

Trouble is- many of them are using iHeart as their streaming platform and where do you think iHeart inserts their ads? At least for the stations I listen to, right over the local traffic and weather.
