There are many, many threads here that discuss this, but it all comes down to personal preference IMO.
  • Dark isn't any more dirt-resistant than light.
  • Dark isn't easier to clean than light.
  • Yes dirt will be more visible on the light interior, but that's a good thing isn't it? With the dark interior you won't see the dirt so it will stay dirty (out of sight out of mind). I don't want that, I want a clean interior.
I don't think this gets pointed out enough. We have the black faux leather in our Model Y and Model 3, and they get dirty. It's just harder to see it. Whenever I wipe down the seats while cleaning out the interior, the cloth comes back dirty -- even though the seats "look" clean.

You have a false sense of cleanliness, even though you're sitting in filth.

BINGO!

Black just hides dirt, but that means you're sitting in it and touching it all the time. No right answers here, some people prefer less glare and in that case dark interiors meet the purpose better but I prefer seeing the dirt as it's a provocation to clean things up.

I'm so over black interiors as a Tesla owner for 5+ years now. My wife's sunscreen shows like crazy in it and it's insane to keep clean and also hot af. I'd rather wipe it down and have a little "ignorance is bliss" vs. having it stare at me the entire time bc it's white sunscreen on black (p)leather lol.

Also we should point out the coastal cloud interior isn't really white; it is much more light grey, not actually bright white like Tesla.

Hello,

I am new to EVs and currently have a reservation for the R2. I was thinking about getting the coastal cloud signature but a little apprehensive and not sure if I should get the darker black crater. It’s just my husband and I however I am worried it may get dirty and not hold up over time. Can anyone tell me how their R1S or R1T has held up that have the lighter ocean coast interior and if there are any regrets. Is the lighter interior easy to clean and is there something to buy to clean it or some type of professional service that can put some type of protection on the interior when you first purchase. Any advice, tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!!
Rivian interiors hold up incredibly well. The light colors don't absorb dirt like a true leather interior does. My green interior doesn't have a mark on it. I don't know how many vegans they slaughter for the "vegan leather" but I'm grateful.

Choices are personal, but I share a strong bias to lighter interiors. Yet the launch options are singularly black...and the exterior colors skew towards dark. The final decisions on color choices must have come after some dark nights or moody blues.

Most fake leathers are petroleum products, polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

I have the white interior in my 3-year-old R1, I do not baby it, and it still looks great. I think light interiors are easier to clean.

The vinyl Rivian uses is very high-quality and cleans up really well. Any decent leather detail cleaner/spray works really quickly to restore it to factory finish.

When I got my dune edition Rivian (white lower seat and back with black headrest and shoulder portion) I did a ceramic coat on it first thing and I have had no discoloration or anything. I got the idea from a post on here. Would recommend!

Truth. You can really use any interior cleaner. I bet distilled water and a microfiber cloth will get the job done just as well.

That's why I mention in the video I'm somewhat indifferent to the various interior cleaning products on offer and tend to buy reasonable brand names that are on sale. It's easy to overspend here, just don't.

the video answers the OP’s question. Maybe you should try watching it?
Thanks but no thanks! I don’t want to waste my time watching a video when a sentence and may be a picture would do

Seeing all these cleaning videos is making me reconsider my Black Crater Sig choice...

I think the Cloud interior elevates what's otherwise a very plain interior. I wish they had Coastal Cloud Signatures interior R2s you could at least sit in and look at.

Coastal Cloud is available in August per the R2 configurator. No reason to jump for black interior right this moment, assuming (proverbial) you even have an order invite to place today. August is only 45 days away. I also think the black interior with black headliner will make it feel cramped and obviously HOT.

Day 1 reserve here in LA but no prior Rivian vehicle or expiring leases, so we’ll see. If the difference ends up being get the car in July vs September, who knows what I’ll do! 😅
