That's quite fair. But many of the Rivian announcements are for PR value with little substance - how many autonomous vehicles is Rivian delivering to Uber this quarter? Next quarter?

No question VWAG needs software help, and they have a desperation deal in place with Rivian. Clever negotiating by RJ and the team, but the rubber hits the road when Rivian software ships on VW group vehicles - otherwise it's all one-time services revenue which provides non-dilutive capital and "progress" towards profitability but anyone worth their salt would reverse out for the purposes of evaluating Rivian's ongoing operations.

Rivian made a number of shrewd bets, including monetizing other IP like Also, while they could. Their marketing team and corp dev team deserves an A+. Now it's up to the non-EDV side of the business to prove there is a real future here. As a 2025 R1S owner, I'm hopeful. But cautious.
I'm pretty sure they seem like a company that's got their act together and are executing. Marketing is essential to a company in this situation, so I'd hardly their marketing efforts of little value. Mind you in journalism school I had to take a marketing class, and the professor flatly stated to a room full of journalists that marketing has little to do with telling the truth, because it's about creating an impression. Still it serves its purpose.

No speculation on what the R4 will be?

A smaller sibling and still on the affordable variant range is all we know. Smaller than R3? A sedan in this day and age? My American brain cannot comprehend anything smaller. My imagination is out of capacity this morning. Someone throw me a bone.

Maybe a 2-seat high performance convertible coupe? :D

Now that just might boost the stock price, because unlike that other EV only automaker, Rivian would actually produce the vehicle not just endlessly hype it.

While I would love a Rivian sports car my hope is they stick with their target demographic and R4 is either a Bronco-ized R2 (removeable top, which I would also love) or full size truck/suv.

Starting with R2 Rivian stepped away from the S and T naming convention. So the 4 could very well be an economical compact truck. And given timing is several years away, points to plans are betting on battery costs being lower and/or having higher energy density. I have a hard time picturing an appealing sports car with Rivian’s stadium lights. Plus, given pure EVs are better at short bursts of speed (instead of top end) a sports car just doesn’t feel like the right space for the company to be in. An economical compact electric truck would not only do well domestically (for private and small businesses customers) but would also provide growth opportunities in export markets. Sane reasons Ford is making one. Same reasons for Slate to exist (but I have doubts on their completely stripped down play, in context of asking price and with absence of tax credits).

Ok, I love the first idea and hope you are right. The R1 inspired by Land Rover and the R2 by the 4Runner. Now we need to copy the removable doors and tops from the Bronco and Jeep. A 2 door version R4 with these features sounds like my dream car.

More likely model name is R2X. Don’t forget they now have the RAD performance sub-brand. And RJ said in recent interview that RAD variants will be fundamentally different (in character) from models they splinter from. For production efficiency, I don’t see X models having different basic form factors (2 doors). They’ll most likely have differences that are cheaper to implement; R3X is proof. Wider fenders to accommodate wider track/stance, plus miscellaneous cosmetic trim and accents.

No word on the R2T? I recall a thread about Rivian applying for a trademark for the name...

RJ mused in a recent interview that he thinks there's a market for smaller pickups in the US (how many brands have fallen on that sword?) but it's not on any current development path.

I would love a bronco sized r4 with some of the key features - removable roof, would love a 5 seater..

I will also say that I would love a full sized sedan (model S equivalent) either one of those would make me pull the trigger
