Very true...could be a supply issues on tires (for the 21's). BUT that could be the tip of the iceberg for a larger issue. Imagine getting a flat and not being able to find a replacement tire! Eeek!

If most of the orders are for 20's, Pirelli and Rivian may have prioritized manufacturing and delivery of the 20's over the 21's. In this supply constrained world, it is a real possibility. I doubt it is a conspiracy theory. If someone really thinks it is a conspiracy theory to get more money out of them, they should probably cancel the order because of who knows what Rivian will charge them for next (mystery subscription charges).

I would be more concerned about range than cost. Won't this decrease range?
Rivian advertises a 10-15% reduction for the 20's vs 21's on their website.

Exactly. This is going to be quite the problem for some people. I'm not worried yet since I have well over a year until I could potentially fake delivery, but I would be quite frustrated if I was forced to take a wheel option with lower range.

Who is being forced? Customers can wait for the 21s to be available, or get the truck sooner with 20s. It might help if they knew how long the wait for 21s was, but they aren't being forced. I think its good Rivian is giving those customers an option.

Yeah, and they are shady for doing that. Revenue 101, supply demand, quick revenue...such an slimy way to twist your clients for extra cash.
It took 4 months to get tires for my car in a common size last year.

supply issues are real. It could be wheels or tires or both.

Rivian probably isn’t out to getcha

Well... Seeing as how the original post didn't mention anything about this being temporary or if there are plans to offer 21 inch wheels in the future, how do you figure people have the option?

Perhaps you have info I don't. My post is based on the info provided in the first post.

Even if Rivian allows people to just wait until the eventually have another supply of 21 inch wheels, I don't really consider that a very good choice. At that point Rivian is forcing people to take a wheel with less range or delay delivery for an unknown amount of time. That's still crappy regardless of you look at it.

I'm reading that Rivian is saying they are "out" of the (FREE/INCLUDED) 21" wheels, and asking owners if they would like to choose the 20's or 22's ($$$$) Wow...anyone else find it ironic they are "out" of the no-charge/free wheel option?

I hope this doesn't become a trend with Rivian. Their customers are too smart for games like this. Fool me once...
So....

We've been in a supply chain crisis for going on two years. Well documented that it's hitting the auto industry hard.

RJ recently stated in an interview that he spends every day working on supply chain issues.

Pirelli is the only supplier of the brand new 21" tire, and there is a documented tire & rubber constraint.

"Pirelli Tire North America Inc. officials characterize shortages and supply chain disruptions as “significant. Pirelli is working closely with customers on an integrated approach to ensure that they are prepared in this environment. "

"While looking into this problem, I discovered another issue. People who own expensive high-end European cars are even more likely to run into a problem because some of those cars have a specific tire size that is only made for a certain make and model."

And you turn this into a conspiracy theory that it's intentional to jack up profits.....

Never ceases to amaze me how some people seem to be able to find drama where there is none.

What do you expect Rivian to do, exactly, if they don’t have the 21 inch tires? Cancel an order? What do you expect Rivian to do, if they don’t know when the next batch of 21 inch tires comes in, do you expect them to stop production? The 21 inch tires are an important option because it allows Rivian to claim over a 300 mile range. This forum is full of posts about people being concerned about the 21s because they are made exclusively (right now) for Rivian, and how difficult it might be to get a replacement. Is it that hard to believe a major tire manufacturer is putting its resources into other tires? If you’ve watch any news program the last couple years, there are supply constraints in almost every industry. If you’ve been to any store the last couple years, some products are harder to find. If you still have to go into a place for work, more than likely, more people have been out sick than before. It shouldn’t be that hard to realize there are supply problems, even on a new truck from a new car manufacturer. Not everything is a conspiracy theory.

I don't expect anything... I merely think the situation sucks. How is that a controversial statement?

I don't have to imagine this. I had an i3 with the front to back different sized 20's on it. Even BMW dealers didn't have those tires for a while and they were not exactly durable either. This was definitely a consideration in my choice not to get the 21's on the Rivian. The other was that I'm an LE customer so there is no cost to switch (outside of the black ones).

My tire dealer had heard there was difficulty getting the non-square sizes, so we ordered both sets about 3 months before expecting to change the rears. Took all three months, too. Just recently put the rears on and tossed the extra fronts into the garage for later.

Source?

Also as was pointed out, all are free when it comes to the LE, so I don't understand the issue if there is one in the immediate or near term when it comes to their deliveries.
