This was at the chargers in the Atlantic terminal while waiting to pick someone up. Never seen this before, thought some of you would get a chuckle out of seeing it. I went inside and let the terminal staff know.

You should have called 911 to get the fire department there ASAP!

If you are a complex or campus etc, many times timely finding local security is much better than dialing 911. Eg, at our work campus, if you need medical help, we are explicitly told not to dial 911. Rather, we dial security so that they can guide the emergency personal right to the location of the issue.

Just a thought…

This.

The airport has its own fire department - contacting airport staff know would get maintenance and airport fire out much faster than 911.

(I’ve been on the safety team at a major manufacturing company facility - same there. We had our own fire team who could get to anywhere on campus far faster than the municipal fire department. They would be summoned, too of course.)

Looks like smoke from inside the lid. I believe it is a bad connection in the junction box.

Tesla actually has a heat sensor for the wires that provide power to the Tesla terminals. Will throttle or stop charging if over temp is detected. Don't ask how I know

I've written 911 call routing software, and let me tell you, just call 911. Unless you have prior SOLID knowledge for alternatives, and already have the number on hand, just call 911. I've listened to hundreds of calls, routed calls, and they know how to get you to the right people. It would go like this:

911 where is your emergency?

Airport.

What is the nature of the emergency?

Charger on fire.

Hold while I transfer you to the airport fire department.

That said, when I read the thread title I had this picture of a Tesla charger kicking back, smoking a cig... It's early and I'm over-caffeinated.

I was thinking “Do not touch doubtful things”, back away next, and then call the fire department.

This was partially intentional. It stopped smoking once I unplugged. Staff came out and said they’d deal with it.

Why would one get a chuckle out of a fire or short that could destroy property?

Those chargers are some of the best chargers on the market and it doesn't look like it's a fault of the charger, but rather an electrical issue inside the box. Almost all the electrical issues with chargers are due to poor connections or cheap components outside of the charger itself. Most of the Tesla chargers in NA are made in Gigafactory New York and the universal charger is a great device for those who have both NACS and J1772 vehicles.

Because the amount of smoke coming out of it would indicate it probably had happened to other people before me who didn’t say anything or the staff didn’t do anything at that point. It’s also funny because it’s not something I’ve not seen before. As far as property destruction at most it would have melted the metal pole containing the wiring. It was in the middle of a concrete island with opposing parking spots with four or five feet on each side. It would have to burn for a long time to spread anywhere to the point it would have run out of fuel to burn unless it ran back to the underground conduit. The danger to anything outside of the property owner was extremely minimal.

I’m not a fireman nor do I play one on TV. But I think you’ve got it all wrong. When you see something like this, you need to dig out a coat hanger from the back of your car, grab some marshmallows and your folding chair and have a good time.
