Will the $45k Rivian R2 actually happen?

Will the $45k Rivian R2 actually happen?

  • A. Yes — absolutely. Rivian will deliver it.

  • B. Technically yes, but barely. Limited production/options/appeal

  • C. Not really. Maybe a ~$50k version, but likely not profitable.

  • D. No freaking way. $45k is the dream, not the business case.

I hope so - it's less about the MSRP on what they sell (I mean, does it matter if it's listed at $45k or $48k, really?)

It's more indicative of the operational and infrastructure investments paying themselves off.

I suspect the reason Rivian "looses" money on every R1S is because they've got to pay down the capital cost of building the infrastructure and operational model to sell them. Eventually that capital investment is paid off, and Rivian will start to make a profit on them (all things being equal)

It's the same reason Ford and GM "lost billions" on the EVs they briefly sold - they chickened out long before the investment into the tooling and factories paid itself off, and simply wrote off the loss. If they built a brand new factory to sell a single vehicle, they'd loose billions regardless, unless they sold that one vehicle for billions.

Selling an R2 at $45k will likely happen once the infrastructure capital investment cost is paid off and returns to shareholders are realized.

Considering they've dropped the price (granted, by ten bucks..... but that's still lower than $45k) since the announcement, and have stuck by that $45k price-point for two years, I'm pretty confident that they will be able to stay with the price - considering they plan on being gross unit profitable around the end of this year.
I'm just saying a year is a long time and RJ is already talking about supply chain issues now with things like memory pricing. I'll leave open the possibility for things out of their control bumping up the price a little.

I voted yes but not for a couple years.

I do want to preface that by saying in todays dollars as inflation shouldn't count for something like this.

It's really about whether they're able to get the price down to compete on price with the Model Y AWD which is roughly $45K or so.

Yes, but it will be inflation adjusted to the 45k of today.

Some of you people don't seem to be lstenting to Rivian. it's coming late 2027. It will be a low-range vehicle, but it's not going to be stripped down. They showed it in Utah earlier this month. And you can bet a lot of people are going to buy them because they need a commuter car that will do the job and save them a ton of money on gas. And considering how Rivian seems to be doing a pretty good job these days on predicting when it's new vehicles are coming out, and what their prices are, why should anyone be making some of the looney claims I've seen in this thread?

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I think it will be one of those special order things, like Tesla’s $35K Model 3 back in the day. Most people want more range than the 275 miles they’re estimating, especially when you factor in things like highway speeds and cold weather, which can reduce your range by as much as 40% (165 miles total). You can get 70+ more miles by paying $3,500 more. I feel like the $48,490 R2 Standard will be the better value proposition.

If someone were looking to save money on gas they should look at the used EV market where you can find potentially better equipped EVs with similar or better range for under $25K. And if they wanted something new there’s the Hyundai Ioniq 5 ($36,600), Nissan Leaf ($29,000), Chevy Bolt ($28,995), etc. These are all cheaper than the $44,990 R2 and you would be saving way more money. The $48,490 R2 Standard with 345 miles of range is the better value proposition, in my opinion.

Yes, in fact the "design your R2" webpage now says "summer 2027" for the 44.9k version, so Rivian will start delivering it by August/September next year. I don't expect volumes to be massive, but only because I think most people willing to consider a Rivian at that price point will be willing to fork over the additional $3,500 for the long range battery.

To me, the $45k R2 doesn’t seem like a true Rivian, more like a Misadventure Vehicle (no tow hitch, rear wheel drive, super low range likely only 150 miles at highway speed). So I think it has an imaginary customer base…we’ll see…
