So lets say you get Performance AT but replace those 20" tires w/ Premium's 20" AS tires - figure your range will be somewhere 307-330 miles. But if AT wheel is heavier then I doubt you'll actually get to 330 - maybe ~320? Just a wild guess.
Now that's a bright guy.Too much math in this thread for me. I’ll keep it simple. Given that all the other wheels/tires get 330 miles, I’ll just spitball that the 20” A/T wheels with A/S tires will get somewhere in between. I’ll just say 320 miles and go on with life because three pages of this is nauseating![]()

If you’re getting the R2 Premium or the R2 Standard you can get the 20" Bicolor Carbon All-Season, which claims to have versatile performance on road and off. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like the R2 Performance has that option though. It’s definitely more of an off-road capable vehicle than the other two. Regardless I think you’ll break somewhere between the 307 of the 20” off-road tire and wheel package and the 20” all-season tire and wheel package. It looks like Rivian has a partnership with Tire Rack, so you should be able to find a greater selection of 20” tires there. Rivian should make a set of those aero covers for the R2, like they do for the R1.From what I understand, generally, a smaller diameter wheel will provide better EV range than a larger diameter wheel assuming the same tire. This is why I assumed that many on this forum were going to go with the 20in wheel on the launch edition and then swap out the all terrain tire at some point for an all season (as well as the well discussed reason that there are many more tires available at the 20in wheel size). I would generally assume that the 20 in wheel would then match or exceed the 330 mi EPA range of the 21 in wheel.
However, a Rivian Service center rep told me that the 20 in wheel is also a heavier duty and heavier wheel than the 21 in wheel and will get worse range than the 21 in wheel, even if you put an all season on it. They said it was because the 20 in wheel was designed for more rigorous off road situation loading and the 21 in wheel was not.
Can anyone corroborate this as being a true situation? I really do not like the lack of tire selection for the 21 in wheel but also don't want reduced range if I pick the 20 in.
As many have said, it seems silly to choose a wheel size with no tire choice availability.
I wonder if Rivian will add 20" AS wheels & tires as a downgrade option on Performance, post-LE? (You know, 'downgrade' for about $1k?) I can't think of any reason why the factory couldn't simply install the Premium 20" AS wheels & tires on a Performance, except maybe the tacit acknowledgment that Performance has a bit of a packaging gap?If you’re getting the R2 Premium or the R2 Standard you can get the 20" Bicolor Carbon All-Season, which claims to have versatile performance on road and off. I would take that if offered. I also think the 21” wheel’s look has a pimp my ride vibe to it.I wonder if Rivian will add 20" AS wheels & tires as a downgrade option on Performance, post-LE? Honestly customers should be able to choose any wheel and tire package they want. A lot of designers are obsessed with big wheels/tires. They look cool and fill the wheel well, but they’re harder to find replacements for and are more expensive.I wonder if Rivian will add 20" AS wheels & tires as a downgrade option on Performance, post-LE? Finally, somebody that didn't get lost in the details. Thank you for your inputI think we are over analyzing this. Get whichever wheel you like more. You’re not gaining 20 miles with a different size rim, maybe 2 miles. You can put AS tires on any wheel you buy. The range difference is like under 1% when the tires are the same. The AT tires are the sole reason the 20” range is worse. Max Koff Chief Engineer has said this many times in many recent YouTube videos.

No. Think about meaning of “performance” and what the two options represent. One has less sidewall, which has less lateral deflection and sharper steering feel. It prioritizes on-pavement performance. The other has more sidewall and tread that skew slightly more towards traction off-pavement and greater contact patch if aired down. It prioritizes off-pavement performance. And both tires are chosen to provide best possible efficiency each category of tires could yield. Each tire option represents each of two versions of “performance”.I wonder if Rivian will add 20" AS wheels & tires as a downgrade option on Performance, post-LE?
