I can't believe they jacked up the prices like this and made standard features optional. What's the point of reserving early if your price isn't locked in? That is a terrible business practice.

If you really want to make the vehicles accessible to everyone. Why wouldn't you keep the original pricing for the quad motor and then have the dual motor option cost $6-8K less?

Won't be hilarious at all. They are choosing not to do business with a company who operates like this. If you like being strung around like a puppet, enjoy your new Rivian truck
Calm yourself. I'm not any level of reservation holder, so this doesn't affect me one bit. That's not to say I don't sympathize with those that got affected by this.

But still, with all the impulsive cancellations going on, Rivian announces that LE and certain holders from a certain date will have their older prices honored and have CANCELLED their reservations with no way of getting their places back, would be a lesson in not being so hasty when news falls.

I still think to let the dust settle and see what Rivian's final decision is. If it winds up that your reservation does get affected, then do what you think is right for you. If that means cancel and get your deposit back, then go for it. But if you cancelled and then it's announced that your reservation position pricing isn't getting affect and no longer have it, you'll regret that more than the initial burst of how betrayed you felt and immediately cancelling.

Just for an additional data point, I’m out too. R1S Dec 2020 pre-order, but canceled immediately upon seeing the new price. Refund in a week or so. I understand it was never a solid price commitment, Tesla did it too, still may be worth it, etc. Not for me. I don’t like this business practice of holding my money for over a year on a vague “maybe we’ll deliver what we told you.” I’ll just go buy a different car when I find one I like.
Just to add, I now understand my parents’ “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.” I’ve been excited about this car for 3+ years (and I’m not a car/truck person — current tuck is 12 years old). I finally had the money to justify purchase in 2020, and was willing to wait as long as it took to get mine delivered. Oh well, guess I’ll go back to not being a car / truck person and get whatever I find that seems reasonable. Thanks for killing my enthusiasm, Rivian. Should’ve known this would happen when I saw the absurdly-priced swag store. Glad I didn’t buy any.

Won't be lucky when the company is bankrupt in 2 years with no one to service your discounted Rivian. But good luck.
lol, sure Jan.

I mean listen... that's not what's going to happen. Rivian has an incredible amount of pent up demand they can't meet today. A price increase, even with many preorder holder cancelling, makes sense — especially with the introduction of cheaper models. Based on its capability, the R1T is still priced competitively even if it was extremely well priced before the increase.

Do I think this is right way to treat preorder holders? No. Especially not Launch Edition preorder holders. We have every right to be upset with them about the way this was handled and communicated.

But they did this because it's what's best for the business. If anything, this should help assuage fears of exactly what you described.

RJ Screwringe....sticking it to the shareholders and fans....just a sad day....losing a little money to have rolling advertisements for your brand. Seems very shortsighted.

Don’t be surprised if they cut back projections like Lucid did. I heard this directly from a Rivian employee. I would consider dumping your Rivian stock.

Rivian's announcement made me think of this old joke:

Doctor: I've got some good news and bad new.

Patient: Okay, give me the bad news first.

Doctor: I'm afraid there was an error in your chart and we in advertently cut off the wrong leg.
Patient: WHAT?!? That's terrible. You've ruined my life!! What possible good news could you have after that???

Doctor: Upon further testing, it turns out the other leg's going to be okay!

No android auto, startup company with no history that doesn't offer a lease option: least they can do is offer a competitive price to early adopters. None of my friends heard about rivian until I told them about my pre-order. Free promotion ends now. I'm out.

Toyota is supposedly coming out with an electric Tacoma. Early pics make it look badass too. That may be a good option for you in the future.

Maybe...but the freedom to design a truck from the ground up has been far more intriguing than the limitations that an existing model maker must face.

Anyone considering shareholder legal action?

I would like to know when the price increase was discussed/considered by Rivian leadership. A price increase of this magnitude seems like a material disclosure at the time of the IPO. I believed the company's stock had a certain value based upon the R1S and R1T price point, and would have not purchased IPO stock if I knew the board/leadership was considering raising prices on current reservation holders.

Not in one go, but prices of the Model 3 went up 23% in 2021 and the Model Y went up 20%.
It's my understanding prices went up on future orders. Not existing.

... with no history that doesn't offer a lease option ...
Curious, since Tesla's inception in production mode, how long did it take them to offer lease options (asking sincerely as I do not know)?
