With this discussion about the tonneau covers, I now have a question. My ordered configuration is the Explore Version. This originally was specified with the manual tonneau cover. In the new configuration, I am now wondering if the manual tonneau will still come with my Explore R1T.
I bet it won't be included as standard and you can option the manual cover, if you choose. I wonder if they'll allow the power cover to be optioned-up, as well?

they do! For only $1500!

remarkable value add for Explore IMHO, and I have configured It!

I think that we will opt out and get our R1T without any tonneau cover. I think that I would rather have a proven tonneau cover design from Gator Trax for about the same cost.

I had a metal and plastic hard-top tonneau cover for my truck in the early 2000's and it was a bear to remove and stow in the backseat by myself. I'm thrilled to sign up for the power tonneau.

Like everything else, I believe Rivian's standards are as high as mine or higher. That means they'll stand behind the system and repair or replace it if necessary.

I've seen one video of the power tonneau sounding like the treads of an M1 Abrams, and another person mentioned the same. But I saw a video posted recently on this forum that revealed the power tonneau being decently quiet. I'm not sure what changed, but if quiet is possible, I believe quiet will be the goal and quiet is what I'll get. Not hum-of-the-fridge quiet, mind you, but maybe like an old fashioned dishwasher.

As far as I'm concerned, it's all good. I love that it disappears into the truck, reappears, and keeps everything safe in the back.

Well done Rivian! I appreciate the work you've done on this. :handsinair:

No video, no pics. No pictures of the bed without the powered tonneau. I don't think it has been made before.

Considering the construction of the R1T bed, I’m having a hard time seeing how a conventional tonneau cover would attach.

Perosnally I’d stick with the factory option, along with its 5 year warranty.

I don’t recall seeing this anywhere…can you stop the power cover partially open/closed? I assume so but all I have seen is what looked like a one touch function.

Sounds like a smaller version of my old Avalanche system as far as storage goes. I wonder how having them slide in the channel affect convenience vs the lift-out Chevy system. In particular, can you slide out just the panel or two closest to the tailgate and have the others stay in place? All those years with the Avalanche I frequently took out only the tailgate panel so something tall, say a lawnmower, could be loaded without having to take off the other panels.

Can't wait to actually see the manual version. It could be my choice as well.
When i spoke with CS, they said you could take out an individual panel. you would lower the tailgate unhook it and slide it out. It does take up some of the space in the gear tunnel however.

according to a person at Rivian I spoke to yesterday, yes... you can stop the power cover at any point... I have no personal knowledge of this however.

Brian, you can check your configuration, but when i had a similar question on why the power one was not included in my adventure package, they said that the tonneau covers were taken out of all configurations and everyone has the option of power, manual, or none. However your price should reflect the absence of the cover till you add it back in.... An example would be that my price when I checked my configuration after the correction was $1500 cheaper than prior to March 1st till i added back in the cover.

That is correct. My base vehicle price is now $66,700 which is $800 less than the prior cost with the manual tonneau cover included. I intend to leave it this way so that I can go for an aftermarket tonneau cover or topper. I will have to assume that R1T's that are delivered without any tonneau cover will not have any slider channels on top of the bed rails.

Does anyone know or has heard about a bed topper like you can get on pretty much every other truck available that's made for the Rivian? There's nowhere to put clamps on it like you would attach other toppers so I don't know how it would be done. I'm someone will come up with one using the mounting points for the cargo cross bars and the tent that they already have now but I need a cover that is as tall as the cab of the truck and covers the whole bed. I can't believe Rivian themselves don't already have one.
