And this is the stuff that drives me nuts about Rivian. I don’t know why they can’t just say they haven’t begun production yet, or they’re going delay a few weeks or months to tweak things. It would be no skin off my nose but telling me that I’m still in the March-April delivery window, and that the purchase process is very quick once a guide contacts me doesn’t assuage any of my concerns.

They really need to be more open and honest in their communication. I was hoping the weekly updates would be that, but we haven’t had one since two weeks ago.
This. They never seem to learn that people prefer open communication and can be understanding of delays. This first happened with the "All LE order holders will have guide contact by end of November". They waited until there were only a couple of days left in November before addressing that. They seem to be doing the same with regards to the R1S deliveries.

I don't care if they tell me my R1S will be delayed 1-3-6 months, whatever. But at least tell me ahead of time so I can plan accordingly rather than get my hopes up until the last possible day. Even if they didn't want to commit to something make a vague statement "With things how they are we may be experiencing a delay of X-Y months on your delivery. However, we are working very hard to pull those in closer to the original window so keep your eye out for the next update".

Died of old age during the wait
He said "besides the two we have produced last year we have yet to start production" I read that to mean they have yet to start production of the R1S version. He said they are working to establish actual delivery estimates and will update order holders soon. I take everything with a pinch of salt been here before with ALL my other EV's communication is always slim pickings on a new car rollout...
This is insane. I would have asked him to double-verify that given that other guides have said they’ve seen R1Ses coming off the line. It’s nuts that Rivian keeps on putting out inconsistencies and half-truths.

As I said I really don't believe they know. I think they have a Hello how are you script; and outside of that they are just winging it. I will follow up and ask him the clarify what he said...

There's probably some McKinsey Report that says your customers are less likely to bolt when you're vague about bad news*...

Nothing new or different, except she went with 6-8 weeks for delivery. Oh and that we were one of just a couple R1S calls she has made.

Apparently building a technologically advanced, immensely capable all purpose SUV at scale....is hard.

Just stating the obvious that 8 weeks pushes you into June.

I appreciate the interior length but the limited hight is going to reduce usability. I was hoping to take a nap back there without bumping my head. With the tailgate down and that kinda height, shorter People may have problem reaching in. Tailgate does not seem to be flat either in case you need to leave it open and carry something long. I definitely have to see it up close to decide if I should change back to R1T. I am sure I am in minority but I would love to lose the third row and I am OK with less comfortable second row seats to get +3” extra height overall.

i think to achieve ground clearance it makes the overall interior space smaller than you'd think but they really should have made the vehicle taller. since the center of gravity is so low they could have done that to give more interior space and probably would have been able to fit a full size spare

they really haven't learned and continue to show that they haven't learned how to communicate to customers. wow, they are really clueless. empower your CS reps with the right info, the same info at the very least.

they just dont get that these little interactions matter. but then again this is very typical for a tech startup. they always focus on the product and engineering, then sales, in this case manufacturing and sales, then customer support and service is always the last thing to come.

I can see the meeting where efficiency folks were fighting the utility guys on this:

EF: If you don't want hummer efficiency, we can't get too big. Use your space wisely. You can have third row and spare tire or you can have more interior space.

UG: We want both. How about we keep the spare but we give option to get rid of the third row.

EF: OK, we can help you out by making it a foot longer than originally intended but we can't add to it's cross section area. Gotta keep the drag bellow requirement.

Manufacturing guys: Most people want the third row, the heck with 5 seater dudes. Get rid of the 5 seater option to make life easier for us. Couples that are not big on popping out babies can get an R1T.

If you make it much taller you start to impact garage parking options. Between the height of our residential garage door and the slope of our driveway we will probably have to lower the R1S to get it to clear our garage door when entering and leaving. Add a few inches in height and it wouldn’t fit at all.

What is the last day someone could start the 8 step process and still realistically have delivery of an R1S in April?

fair point. understand some garages dont fit but i dont think that should be a main design decision as most garages probably will fit.
