I was assigned a guide last week, had the call on Friday, and she asked me if I was open to any variations in my configuration - gave her a few colors and wheels options that I'd be open to. She said she'd let me know. I texted her yesterday and she asked me about my openness to additional colors including forest green (definitely no on FG). Told her thanks for keeping a lookout and then she refreshed her page and it told her mine is built and going through final tests and inspections right now. I couldn't get her to give me any kind of official revised delivery date - so all I still *actually* have is from the December 2021 email when I still had the max pack of 1H23. However, I was able to pry out of her that pessimistically speaking, I should be in my truck by July 1, so I'm placing myself in the May - June delivery window.
Your truck has been assigned and doing final inspections and you hope to be in it in 60 days???

Sounds like it should be way sooner than that!?

That's the only date I could get my guide to even remotely "unofficially" agree that should be absolute worst case scenario. I think they are strictly forbidden to update delivery dates until there's an actual assigned VIN/8 step process completed.

It all seems pretty random at this point. I live near the Irvine HQ and the Costa Mesa delivery center, and there are people with dates after even mine getting contacted. I can't be too mad though since I ordered in 2021 and there are people before me waiting. I figured it would be neck and neck between Ford and Rivian to get me an EV Truck first, but Ford seems to be way ahead at this point.
Yeah it makes zero sense to be assigning guides delivering trucks to 2021 pre-order customers in Southern California when there are tons of us that are flexible on configurations and have pre-orders a year or 2 older. I'm sure this is one of the areas with the most pre-orders.

I don't mind waiting my turn, but this kind of out of order delivery mess makes your assigned window completely useless.

This all really messes with me. One of my defining personality traits is I believe in processes and get real anxious when they aren't followed. So if we're all standing in line, and then someone gets called up to the front for no apparent reason that REALLY bothers me. If I'm at Disneyland and they are looking for a pair of riders to fill a car and pull two folks from behind me, I don't care. Or if someone in front of me was in line, left to go the bathroom and I see them try to go back to the end of the line, I will encourage them to take their original spot.

So, Rivian just randomly pulling folks up in the line without doing the rest of us the courtesy of explaining why they are doing it is really annoying me.

So, today I'm looking at Sotheby's auctions and thinking $80k on a Banksy is probably a better long term use of my money than a Rivian :)

I'm curious how people are being assigned vehicles. Are they assigned from the factory and guides are told which vehicles belong to which customers or are guides in our local area assigning vehicles to people?

If guides are assigning vehicles to customers does that mean a more pro-active guide can run through the list and assign a large number of vehicles to, he/she customers? Is that how people with non-Launch Edition orders are being offered launch edition vehicles? Just finalize as many orders as possible.

I'm not complaining but my guide told me my vehicle is locked in (signed my PBA) and I just have to wait. I asked if there were any options that could prevent me from getting a vehicle sooner. She gave me a simple no, just wait. But couldn't give me a time frame. She did say when you receive your 8 step you know you're getting close.

I know a few people with the same build have received their 8 step already.

The last vehicle I purchased was a custom order Mustang and I was able to track the vehicle on the Ford website. From the day it started production to being in transportation, etc.

As an early 2019 order near 3 service centers with no contact, I’ve got to say that I find this thread frustrating.

However, I keep in mind that there have been ZERO forest edge trucks delivered and ZERO R1S delivered, so I’ll save my true frustration for when deliveries occur. Right now I’m not convinced these dates are real. We have had two FE deliveries “happening tomorrow” that never happened.

LG/FE/20s
Not entirely true, there has absolutely been a FG/FE delivery (pics on this forum), which mean there have been several others.

I think you've answered your own question. Rivian doesn't see a line, they see a crowd and they say, "You there, yeah you, come on down."

Ultimately, the matter of a few weeks or even months won't really matter two years from now, so probably best to just keep that perspective. Also, if it weren't for the internet and forums, a lot of people could still get delivery in their estimated window (or close enough) and be none the wiser of people getting theirs sooner. So, in some respects its torture of our own making...

This is a great question and I am curious about how this works as well, and if the guides can actually influence who gets what vehicle.

That last point is spot on - if I were a normal Rivian customer I'd have no idea what was goign on - I'd know that I was in day 4 of a 60 day Window - ignorance is bliss.

Those of us with preorders over a year before you don't have much sympathy. Hard to understand how an EARLY preorder does very much for an earlier delivery. Maybe they just aren't making enough GW/BM to make my May/June delivery window... just doesn't make much sense. It's more about what's more convenient for Rivian than anything else.

8 steps and VIN assigned! Getting real!
Yes!!!

I think you, @Rhidan , and me should all take delivery on the same day/time at the service center and throw a party in the parking lot. Think about it.

Wasn’t asking for sympathy. But thank you any ways. I was just questioning the process.
