Good evening

When I ordered my R1T, i ordered a set of crossbars just in case. I don't know when i will use them, but it seemed like a good time to get them.

What is everyone's opinion from an aesthetic standpoint. Should I keep them on or off if not using, and if on, do they look better on the roof or bed?

Best

Off, anytime you have them on in either location you’ll take a hit on efficiency/range due to aerodynamics.

On roof just makes it taller in tight parking garages. On bed it will interfere with loading hay and other things that I will be tossing in the bed. Both places will affect aerodynamics and increase wind noise.

So for me, I don't see any reason to have them attached to the truck unless I need them.

Well, that's a big assumption with no data to support it. I'm getting better efficiency with the bars and bike racks on, over the bed. FWIW, tonneau is closed.

My opinion, and experience, says keep them on and wherever you like them asthetically. For me, functionally says over the bed. I've loaded plenty of things around them without hassle.

I purchased mine for the look only. I won't use them for tent, bikes, etc. So, I keep mine on. Still pulling 2.3 to 2.4 efficiency driving 80 on interstate.

If on the roof, leave them off except when in use. For the bed that’s more optional but they will probably induce a bit more drag there. Frankly, i plan to leave them off because they’re just too easy to add or remove.

BTW, just to add to this conversation, Rivian really needs to get some new accessories to market for those mount points. No other vehicles has that kind of versatility. I’d like to see Rivian take fuller advantage of it.

EDIT: To add to my suggestion, it would be great if Rivian sold the clamps that use those mounting points to let customer create their own custom cargo solutions.

I was just thinking of this. I’d use them to attach an awning on the roof using only one side’s mount points.

I agree. I would also love to see the ability to add a “channel” under the tonneau so you could add all types of cargo management items like are available on a lot of other trucks.

I keep ALL four on ALL the time. The airfoil design creates lift thereby decreasing effective vehicle weight and rolling resistance. Been achieving 4.2mi/KWh with this configuration.

JK- I dont have my truck.
