Mike,

That's great news and a wonderful story! I love that your PermaGrin is already firmly in place. Looking forward to seeing you, your R1T, and your grin at our next get-together, SOON.

I'm envious, as I'd hoped for the same trip, but it was too early to make that happen. I'm glad you got to see the R1S's you were able to spy. Isn't the Mothership amazing! Same for the people there.

I know EA has been working on I-80 through Wyoming, but will you have to drop down to Denver to make the crossing? If so, consider heading North from I-70 out of Rifle, Colorado, and veering Northwest towards Roosevelt, Utah, if range isn't an issue. You'll eventually rejoin I-80 around Park City. Of course, if you have the time to continue to Southern Utah to play in the red rocks, have fun, and get some great pics for us!

Congrats and safe travels!

Congratulations on your new R1T. It looks great, and it will be so fun to trek back to Oregon. The picture of the back end and Temporary Tag answered a question i had on how long the temp tags were good for. Since your temp tag doesn't expire until August 22nd, that means they're putting 90 days on their temp tags, giving time for slow DMV to get permanent plates to you. I read in another forum thread of folks waiting at least two months and even tags expiring before their plates arrive. Hoping when mine gets delivered to the house on June 8th that NC doesn't take 90 days to get me permanent plates, but even if they do, it just means i have to drive the heck out of it before the temp tags expire!!! Looking forward to joining the Perma-Grin club soon! Congratulations again on your delivery experience.

Or if not, blue painters tape! I did that driving long distances before PPF. A lot of "car guys" will use blue painters tape as a temporary measure.

Looks funny but it does the job. You have a long drive, so there's a high chance you'll get rock chips on that flat front end before arriving home.

I mean if you had Rivian Blue, then blue painters tape would blend in. :p
Just use thick tape...at least 2"....

We pulled up the delivery center and sitting right there was an LG/FE R1S. Reid wasn't sure if pictures were allowed, and I didn't want to get anyone in trouble after they had been so gracious moving up my date.
…might be sharing a peek at it in one of your photos. We’ll just keep that amongst ourselves ?…

This will be a mess as i am
on my phone using voice to text.

I got to stop by the factory this morning before I headed out of town. They let me walk around a catwalk above the factory floor where I could see parts of the R1 line as well as parts of the Amazon EDV line. Very cool indeed.

As for the drive itself it was fairly uneventful. I was able to cover about 635 miles in about 12 1/2 hours inclusive of charging stops. every charger I've used which have mostly been Electrify America worked flawlessly.

The only issue I was having had to do with the highway assist as part of driver plus it would intermittently throw up very ominous warnings and then shut itself off I put a call into service and they thought it was because of the rain and limited visibility from spray and what not which seems reasonable as that is sort of what happens with my Subaru and eyesight whenever it gets rainy or generally gross on the roads the issue is that rather than just saying hey we can't see the road Rivian throes of these warnings with words like system fault and the truck is stopping now so it's a little bit scary.

i've been trying to do pretty good about noting charging sessions and how long they take and how much power I get back as well as power consumption on the various legs it was interesting because early in the day I was getting about two whatever that is Miles per kilowatt hour or whatever and then in the last half of the day it was about 1.65 not sure what that's about might've been because it was raining more heavily it also got colder dropping from the mid 60s into the low 50s so maybe that explains it

I've attached a few screenshots of the statistics from different legs of the trip down below when I get home I'll crunch all the numbers for the whole trip and post that

I’m guessing you drove down through Colorado? The Dakotas, Wyoming, and eastern Montana are pretty bleak when it comes to fast charging.

Thanks a ton for posting! Very cool and informative and such an amazing experience.

I'm planning a trip once I get my R1T today (in Normal) I'll post pictures ASAP, but only live 45min away.

Unfortunately, EA has yet to finish their I-80 stations in Wyoming, forcing folks south to I-70 to cross the Rockies. It adds to the trip, but a much prettier route, at least for me.

Come on, EA! Get your poop in a group!

Mike,

Thanks for all of your great insights and pics. I love the shot of you in the lobby. Good to hear you got to view the factory floor from above. I'll bet that was amazing.

Safe travels!

@ja_kub_sz,

I'll bet you know of a dozen 250-mile+ "shortcuts" to get you back home. I'm 3½ miles from my office, and I'm no longer surprised that the round-trip frequently takes me over 50 miles, especially if the long version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida comes on during the drive. That drum solo alone is good for another five miles, each way. ?

I think it is getting close on the route through Montana then down through SD on I90 but even with what is 'coming soon' that stretch between Rapid City and Sioux Falls would be a major challenge for an R1T Large Pack.

@jjswan33,

Thanks for the update. The Intermountain West region still has enough gaps in it to make it a no-roll zone for me, at least in the short term. I'm trying to determine the non-277-volt level 2 Tesla chargers in that area that would allow me to use my TeslaTap adaptor for charging. Many places have chargers, but I don't know the details of their capabilities.

My understanding from earlier conversations in these forums is that Rivians will not accept a charge from those 277-volt Tesla L2 units installed by some vendors. Does anyone know of a map or guide that spells out the details of the non-networked, publicly-available Tesla Destination Chargers, whether listed as freebies, or pay-to-play?

On another note, how is the rehab going on your right knee? I hope you're doing well, progressing, and get the chance to join us the next time we have a Rivian Roundup.

Keep up the PT!
