From the extremely small sample size in this thread, it appears the shop invites are all on the west coast so far.

CA = 2
OR = 1
WA = 1

@SACDFJC & @nfrank did you have a guide assigned before getting the Shop invite?
I got a guide last week. I configured RC with FE. He recommended against that if I want the truck sooner than later.

These are builds that have been orphaned, people for what ever reason, whom are ahead of you and me in the queue changed their mind. I got the invite to browse "the Shop" and see if anything was to my liking. Why I was ahead of ksujeff99 in the process I have no idea. Why people with 2021 reservations are ahead of me with a delivered truck I have no idea, is this by design or error, some day we may know. This I do know, they only have so much capacity due to parts shortages. Per SC they could be pumping out a lot more vehicles if they had the parts needed.
Did you have a guide assigned prior to getting access to the shop? I feel like only people with guides previously lined up and configurations confirmed may be getting the initial invites. Could be wrong, but that could be a thing

@goldburger can you walk me through how you saw this code? I know I did it once before when trying to track a Tesla VIN but forget how to pull it.

Reading all of this, I agree with a lot of points but I do wonder if any of you ordered another vehicle before.
The dealership (in this case the SC) never knows anything, they only tell you what you want to hear or simply repeat the words you put in their mouth. Car business hasn’t changed all that much. Someone wisely pointed out that the Shop is the equivalent to buying a car off the lot (worked for most people in the US, unlike in Europe where most dealerships are so small they don’t have a lot and most people custom order their vehicle).
Similar idea, do you truly believe these are all trucks that are orphaned because people changed their mind last second? Some did, some couldn’t finance, some cancelled, some freaked out looking at the bad panel alignment, paint issues and other QA issues, etc.
Rivian is great but like most companies they only tell you what you want to hear or keep silent. Tony knows what’s up and the Rivian story hasn’t been a fairytale so far.

I have to admit that whenever we get our hands on ours, we’ll most likely go from “whatever” back to being big fans of the company like many others here. Such is life.

I bet some are orphans, but if most end up being one of only a few builds they could be products of batching. Rivian couldn't find an immediate match to an early preorder holder and offered the suboptimal batched product instead.

Because they really need it ASAP, they know the R1 Shop truck exists, and they don't believe their custom build will really be delivered in 6-8 weeks.
As I put in my original thread, "A bird in the hand", hell maybe I just should have waited and let my time expire in the shop and I would have received my original config before I receive the one from the Shop. At this point it no longer matters.

I was originally invited to the shop June 6th and then jumped on one on the 7th. I'll be taking delivery on Friday the 17th.

At any rate, I just got another email this evening inviting me to browse the shop again. That would be about one day past the 7 day window. It doesn't matter though, you click the link and it 404s you. Somewhere it knows that you've already purchased one.

Pretty amazing. The guide said it was his first r1 shop sale. I suppose I was lucky that there was nothing wrong with the truck and it was already in my local service center. If you didn't already know, Rivian will require proof of insurance prior to letting you take the vehicle. If you have two people on the title both folks need to be there to take delivery. Accessories will be shipped to the house. I'm picking it up at the service center but I suppose they'll also deliver it. There is a portal where you have to upload a check picture and then mail it with tracking and provide them the tracking ID.

It's pretty automated. You'll get your electronic purchase agreement with the van that you can use to secure financing if you need it. They don't participate in the dealer Network of wiring money. You're supposed to get a check and then mail it to them or do a wire transfer.

If I had known a bunch of things sooner I would have simply had the bank put the money in my bank account and done one electronic transfer. Any bank will make you execute the loan documents and the title documents so they really don't need to be involved as they are secured. They can just give you the money so you can pay the man.

I've still got a 2018 Tacoma long bed extra cab. I've been burning myself out trying to figure out how to clean the garage to get all the cars in there. Not sure about shaking the Toyota yet because we do a lot of camping and pull a trailer. I have a bit of ranging anxiety that will have to work out. You see all these videos. Okay. But anybody that's pulled trailers through many states knows that it's an open question as to whether doing it in a vehicle with 300 miles of range unloaded, loaded with trailer, would make for a stimulating and relaxing vacation.

Cheers
I just got a reinvite also, sometimes you just have to laugh. Wish I could have gifted it to the man from KC.
Cheers.

I believe I've said it before, you will be the very last truck built. Nobody is configuring the Christmas spec, so you won't be part of a batch. Wouldn't be surprised if you have to pay before production lol.

Perhaps I wasn't clear because I think we largely agree. Early preorders with eligible options (FE/BM, large pack, R1T) should have a close delivery window. By and large that seems to be the case. Why would I switch to something I don't want just to get it perhaps a few weeks sooner? If I was given a July-August window and got invited to the shop this week I'd peak out of curiosity but I wouldn't be taking anything from there.
It’s not necessarily switching to something you don’t want. Potentially switching to something else you want.

Im between two colors. I had the underbody which I’d be fine with, but not sure I need it so I took it off to be $1500 cheaper. If it had it, I don’t think I’d mind. Same goes for the spare. I wouldn’t get a yellow truck just because it’s available, but there are certainly options I’d be more than willing to take.

As for orphaned trucks. That worries me. Early on, Tesla we’re selling cars in inventory. Many had issues discovered at delivery where the customer would then reject delivery. (Accidents, quality control issues, etc) They would send them off to body shops and SCs to be fixed and then list them for sale as inventory. I’m not saying this is what’s happening, but past experience has me wondering.

Yes I have Vehicles
I didn’t read the entire thread but, this sure seems like a solid step forward in servicing customers in more of a priority order. This seems uncharacteristically well thought out for the Rivian customer service leadership team. Perhaps Karine Jean-Pierre is moonlighting for Rivian

This video of the R1 Shop was posted on Rivian Stories. Hat tip to Ryan Martin.
