Did you pay Rivian the registration fees, or did you pay the DMV?I got mine about 2 weeks ago. Truck was picked up May 10th. I think it was roughly 6 weeks from truck to plates.

I paid through Rivian when I picked up the truck. That was a day or two before they officially got their dealer's license. Not sure if that makes a difference. I did have to pay a small fee at DMV to get my custom plates transferred.Did you pay Rivian the registration fees, or did you pay the DMV?
In the end its a matter of pay now or pay later. DMV will look at what you've paid so far and make adjustments when you go to register it. That's based on my last car that was purchased from a dealer out of state. I thought the same thing at the time that the dealer collected too much but it somewhat helped the pain when I went to register it and it wasn't as much as expected when getting the plates.Do any of you with an R1T have your license plates yet? Did you pay Rivian for the registration fee, or did you pay the DMV when you got your plates? Rivian is attempting to charge me the 1st year registration fees of approx. $1400 indicating that they will register it for me. I was unware that this is an option in Colorado. The DMV always requires me to be present for registration if my name is on the vehicle. I have purchased probably 15 cars and not once has a dealer collected the registration fee from me. Seems like a headache in the making if I agree to give them those funds.
Well, there is the matter of sales tax and registration fees. If you pay sales taxes out of state, you will receive a credit when you go to register the vehicle and only pay the difference. The registration fees are an entirely different story. When you register you pay any unpaid taxes plus the registration fees. You would never pay out of state registration fees, but if you did, you would not be given credit by the DMV. I am not convinced it is appropriate for Rivian to be collecting the registration fee from Colorado buyers. The sales tax, yes, but not the registration fees. It is curious that it worked out ok for kneebuster, but as he said, that was before Rivian had a dealers license. They are taking a very strange approach. In many states it is customary for the dealer to collect registration fees. It seems that they are applying that one size fits all approach to Colorado. In the end its a matter of pay now or pay later. | CO, ID, IN, MS, NV | Tesla will title your vehicle and you will receive a self-registration packet. Tesla will title your car and present the documents you'll need to complete registration at time of delivery (Idaho and Mississippi) or via mail or email (Indiana and Nevada). In Colorado, your DMV will notify you by mail once your car is ready to be registered online. Any registration fees will be calculated and collected at the time of registration. |
How much was the "Vendor Fee" that they charged you? For future reference, to what source does one refer to prove this fee does not apply in CO?Well, as a data point for the group, Rivian agreed to remove the registration fees from my total purchase price after I pushed them on it. I really don't think they can/should collect the registration fee in Colorado. Every state is different. Below is what Tesla says about Colorado, which is exactly how it should work.
Also watch out for your sales taxes. They were overcharging me for something called a "vendor fee." My guide said that no CO customers had ever questioned her on it, but after doing some research she agreed that it was an error that should be removed.
To Rivian's credit, they were VERY fast in correcting these issues.

Really bizzare. Who did the plates come from?I had the same experience as Kneebuster. No issues or concerns and received my plates via FedEx approx 6 weeks after taking delivery.
I'm surprised you were able to transfer plates at all since the bullshit change they implemented this year.I should add that when I went to DMV (Jeffco in Golden) to swap the plates I received for my old custom ones, the person helping me was confused that I'd received plates in the mail (FedEx like cohall said) rather than a Title Complete Notice. After a minute or so on the computer, she went ahead and transferred my custom plates, no problems
Some completely nonsensical company name. Literally something like "General Logistics Contracting". Had no clue what it was until I opened the envelope.Really bizzare. Who did the plates come from?

I'd previously been told by 2 different DMV employees that I'd need to surrender the custom plates and get new ones made. The last person said that I didn't need to do that, so I was able to put my old plates on right away. I honestly liked the last answer best.I'm surprised you were able to transfer plates at all since the bullshit change they implemented this year.

I was really wondering how that BS was going to work out. The link I posted unfortunately shows that if you take a non-personalized plate and want to use the same numbers you have to get a personalized plate. The real shit of it is they don't just print a normal plate with those numbers with the picture...no, it literally becomes a personalized plate with no pic in the middle. Kind of infuriating. I've had two consecutive plates since I moved here about 8 years ago and have liked just moving them around. Guess I'll be breaking that when my R1 shows up. What's more unclear is if you have a special org plate if you have to make a new donation to qualify to get a new plate issued. If that's the case, it's even more BS because with plate transfer that wasn't an issue at all.I'd previously been told by 2 different DMV employees that I'd need to surrender the custom plates and get new ones made. If they don't have it worked out, just explain the situation and they should remove the registration fee. They had no problem removing it for me.Also, for an additional point on the Registration Fees question. I'm a disabled veteran so I don't pay registration on any one vehicle I own. Obviously, I'll put those plates on this new truck. So...I'm definitely not wanting to pay Rivian anything for registration then I work the swap of my DV plates from my Gladiator to the R1T. Hopefully by the time they get to me, they'll have this worked out...
