Hello forum- long time lurker making his first post. I’ve been waiting for a much longer time than most for their truck as I really want the max pack and want nothing to do with the powered tonneau. I have been given the standard “1st half 2023” delivery estimate. In the past two days I have received two emails telling me to get ready for purchase and I now have a guide. The email reads in part “… we’re excited that your R1 is almost ready to go.”
My general question is that I’m wondering if anyone else with a similar config getting these emails? Has there really been some Great Leap Forward that should make me believe that my window has moved up 6 months? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have no answer for you but it’d be really exciting to hear that Max packs are being delivered. Keep this thread updated.

You would definitely be the first Manual tonneau, as well as Max pack. No one with either of those options, let alone both, has a contact as far as we know. I don't think there's even been a prototype of the manual tonneau seen yet?

While I am happy for you if you are approaching delivery, I think it likely you are still at least 6 months out (and likely more).

Or perhaps about to receive an invite to the Store to pick from available configs if delivery is more important than the config.

Interesting. I thought the Max Pack was still vaporware.

I’ve been allowed to peruse the store for several weeks now. Despite the early “this invite won’t last forever!” impression, there’s been no indication that I will lose my store access.

I thought I saw somewhere a few weeks ago that some Max Pack order holders have been contacted by guides, but that the expectation was still that they'd be delivered in 2023. Let me see if I can find that thread...

Edit: Here it is.

“Tonneau
We have two lockable tonneau cover options, both of which will protect against light weather. Our powered tonneau cover integrates into the truck and slides automatically with a touch of a button. It can also be operated remotely through our app. Our manual tonneau is easily removed in four lightweight panels that store in the Gear Tunnel.”
This has been on the Rivian site for a while. Not sure if this constitutes proof of a prototype, but it sounds designed to me. My configuration has been “confirmed.” If I want to make changes I must contact my guide. This is quite surprising to me, again, given my expected delivery date a minimum of 5 months from now.
Are they taking a break from the powered tonneau covers? I would suppose that all they have to do is not install it. Somewhere I saw that the four manual panels slide into the same grooves the powered slats go into. If that’s the case, and the profit/revenue is there to add 25% more batteries, how far away might I actually be?

What I meant was that no one has actually seen a manual tonneau. They've never even shown one on any test vehicle as far as this forum knows.

The manual tonneau was, I suspect, the primary reason I was given a Nov-Dec delivery window in the last round of communications. Since then the 20ATs and underbody have also been in short supply so at this point no one really knows.

I am extremely interested in your outcome because the manual is what I've wanted the whole time.

Ah, I see. I promise to keep you all posted and I’m dying to see if I’m the only one in this boat.

As someone with the same configuration but ordered much later than you, this is great news! I hope they get you your truck soon.

I wonder if it is possible to switch out a powered cover to the manual tonneau cover after delivery I've had my R1T for about a month and the powered tonneau is already broken.

I do remember reading somewhere that manual tonneaus were being tested on support trucks. Mentioned from an employee at a service center. I've got to imagine that the manual tonneau is a HUGE priority for Rivian. The automatic tonneau is such a black eye for the company. Bad press everywhere, broken tonneaus everywhere, clogging up the service centers, etc. I really hope by the time I have a chance in line the manual is available. If not, I may end up changing my config even if I have to wait longer. I plan on keeping this truck a long time I don't want to have to worry about this auto cover.

I can only think of three reasons why they don't have a manual tonneau yet. It is a premier "selling point." Second, it's more expensive so they make more money off of it (if you don't count all the associated costs of it breaking on 90% of trucks). Third, they pre-ordered a bunch in anticipation of them being popular and need to get rid of inventory.

Manuals, on the other hand would be cheaper to produce, easier to install (so take up less time on the line), not break all the time, and would be good enough for 90% of truck owners.
