Well I had placed an order for a BMW i4 and iX earlier this year when I didn't think I was going to get my Rivian anytime soon. Well I ended up getting my R1T delivered at the end of July after I changed the wheels from 22" to 21". I forgot about the BMW's since I wasn't contacted by the dealer to confirm my builds, but today I got an email saying that the iX was in port at Baltimore and should be at the dealer by the end of the month. I was very confused and the dealer said they tried to contact me to finalize my build, but I never responded......so I'm not sure what happened there. Well with the recent tax changes, the BMW is now effectively $7500 more expensive than it was 5 days ago, plus I'm loving the R1T. I told the BMW dealer to keep me posted and I can always go check out the iX to see it in person....I don't even remember what I had ordered to be honest.

These are a completely apples to oranges comparison, so I'm not sure if anyone out there has any experience with both of these models or not. I guess I can always see what kind of trade in the BMW dealer would give me on the R1T.

Long story short, I went from not thinking I'd have either vehicle anytime soon to having both of them show up within a few weeks of each other.

I think the iX is cool and all, but there is absolutely nothing on the market that is as good a value as the R1T. The biggest thing is do you want a truck or SUV? And do you prefer having some more manual buttons in the cabin? I also considered the iX when it felt like my R1T was never coming, but all things even, R1T wins by a landslide.

I test drove a BMW iX and was not impressed. Visuals aside (admittedly not my cup of tea), I thought they were relying way too much on a squishy seat (fine on a test drive, but I have serious doubts it'll work on long trips, or last for years of ownership). I also thought they tried WAY too hard to make it feel "not like an EV". The regen braking is almost non-existent, for example. I had to use the friction brakes as much as if it were an ICE vehicle.

Can't speak for the R1T since Rivian continues to punish us Canadians, but my folks have an IX and it is amazing. Range, comfort, and quietness are all outstanding. Truly a great luxury vehicle, not going to hold a candle to the R1T in terms of offroad ability and practicality though and the software is a big hit/miss as a legacy auto.

You weren't in one-pedal drive mode then. B on the gear selector is one-pedal drive, will re-gen aggressively all the way to a complete stop.

Well I just went to get a quote from Carvana and they won’t even get me an appraisal until all of the DMV/title work is completed on the Rivian. I’m assuming the BMW dealer would be the same, so if that’s the case, then they made up my mind for me anyway. I was 98% keeping the Rivian anyway.

That B mode took me a minute to figure out during my test drive. I actually really liked the IX, so much so that I have one waiting at the port to ship as a backup or alternative to the R1S I've been waiting on for 4 years. I signed a doc with a non-refundable deposit prior to new law going into effect to hopefully secure the tax credit.

Can't you still get the tax credit through the end of the year?

The iX is remarkably ugly and is going to depreciate like mad. It's an ugly, unpopular BMW.. the thing will be a disaster to own, IMHO.

Will depend if there is a binding contract. If not, then OP would be purchasing after Aug. 16, 2022 but before Jan 1, 2023. If the latter is the case, then the BMW ix must be manufactured in N.America, of which it is not.

Plug-in Electric Drive Vehicle Credit Section 30D | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)
"If you purchase and take possession of a qualifying electric vehicle after August 16, 2022 and before January 1, 2023, aside from the final assembly requirement, the rules in effect before the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act for the EV credit apply (including those involving the manufacturing caps on vehicles sold). If you entered into a written binding contract to purchase a new qualifying vehicle before August 16, 2022, see the rule above."

I’m sure my wife would gladly take the bmw over her Volvo, but I’ll veto that one.

I am going to probably agree with you on this one. I see the Rivian holding its value very well, especially for pre 3/1 pricing folks. I don’t think I can say the same for the iX.

I appreciate all of the comments and feedback! I just don’t think the iX is ā€œmeā€ and the Rivian definitely fits my personality much more than I think the BMW would.

I think I’ll still check it out in person because I don’t even remember what my configuration was, but most likely going to be a no go.
