To be clear, I'm not saying that you're doing this. Totally willing to give you benefit of the doubt. But I wouldn't put it past people to accidentally break a window in their garage, which isn't covered under warranty and claim that since gear guard didn't "catch the thief that did it," Rivian should eat it and repair as a goodwill gesture.
All good, I know you're not trying to stir up a commotion. It's always good to be skeptical. I already talked to Rivian and my insurance is covering it and I pay the deductible.

@Dark-Fx Yes I've had Gear Guard set to "Everywhere" since day 1. It's recorded a bunch of times, but not when it was apparently important to do so.

@CommodoreAmiga It was plugged in overnight for charging. I closed my garage, but talking to some random neighbors they said they saw it open overnight. It's a detached garage at an apt complex. I'm thinking somehow someway either my partner or myself touched the garage opener without realizing it while we were in our apt on an upper level. Our garage openers are super sensitive and the apt complex management acknowledges that issue.

@COdogman I'm moving to another place and that is going to be the first thing I do once we're settled in.

@AdamsFan1983 Nothing wrong with being skeptical. This is far from being staged or whatever you may be thinking. And call me naive, but not sure what you mean by goodwill replacements. Just like everyone else here I'm proud to be an R1T owner and advocate Rivian to all my friends and family. I get that features are far from perfect it just bums me out that it couldn't work during a time it was intended for.

@flightlevel Thanks for the guidance. Rivian is picking up my truck to replace the window and do some trim and paint corrections this week. I'll keep that in my pocket when I get it back and Gear Guard stops working again.
Time for some home automation that notifies you whenever the garage door is opened or closed. It's saved me from leaving ours open overnight a few times.

Just my speculation.

The gear guard alarm may work off the proximity sensors. Parking in a tight garage would have all those sensors already tripped. The alarm algorithm may ignore the sensors that are tripped when entering "off" mode.

I guess it just depends on how sensitive they have the proximity detection.
That's a pretty good observation and never considered that. My garage is tight as hell and sensors are always pinging when I park. I'm gonna have to call Rivian about that and see what they say.

Well you kind of are. What a terrible human being to just blame the poster for the issue thinking there’s secondary gain. It’s bad enough that they got violated - now you gotta imply that they are lying. Cmon man chill out. By the way the OP isn’t looking for you to “give him the benefit of doubt”…

I hope for your sake the new place is more secure than this one. Until then at least make sure the door from your garage into your house is secured. Those thieves are pretty bold. Even if you only buy one of those cheap but loud as hell door/ window alarms. You could move it with you.

I am not sure that fully explains it because I park in tight spots at work next to vehicles on 3 of the 4 sides and it still records people walking between and around the truck.

I've only had one session record video and it was mainly triggered by people walking around the back side of the vehicle while i was in a parking spot. Are you sure the trigger isn't from the rear and then it continues recording?

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I often have a video with a car to my right in my office parking garage, but then the next video the car is gone. Someone had to walk right between my truck and their vehicle to get in and drive away -- but I don't have a video of it.

I'll figure out how to do this at my new place. Thanks.
Look at the MyQ garage door openers. They can alert when opened, when closed, and on schedules if left opened. I have mine set to ping me at 10, 20, and 30 minutes if the garage is left open.

At my vacation house I also have it ping when the door opens and closes. It has saved me a couple of times when the door was not closed when going for a bike ride. You can also close it or open it from anywhere over Wi-Fi and check the status of the door position.

I think I made it very clear what I am and am not saying. :). Incidentally, you can't call someone out for not believing OP (which i do), and then say "I acknoledge you said you believe him, but it doesn't count because your opinion wasn't sought." Thats not how it works.

Or, if you don't want to replace your garage door opener, this is super cheap and effective.

I'm sure there are wifi versions too.

OP, talk to Rivian. They should pay for this. It is well documented that the Gear Guard Alarm simply doesn't work, and they are treading in very dangerous territory by not acknowledging it as a real issue and by shipping the trucks with a known false claim. They have potential legal liability here so I would bet they will be very accommodating to you.

I find it baffling that the trucks were shipped with this issue, and that even the latest software update only fixes the "screen on" issue and not the fact that the alarm still won't sound for any reason.

Yea; again, to be clear. I get it. I believe you. Just presenting a variety of potential explanations.

People need to take things on this forum w/ more skepticism, even/especially what I post.

Thats a good resolution with your insurer. I've been somewhat disappointed that nationwide doesn't offer riders for accidental/full glass or road hazard for tires. I'd happily pay extra to not have to buy tires or glass.
