21" tire tread wear and mileage.

Question I’ve asked Rivian and have yet to receive an answer. What is the minimum Load Rating and Speed Rating? Is it 116 or 115, and maybe H on speed. I checked with my local Costco and Discount Tire, both said, they will not put on tires that do not meet the minimum load & speed rating for the vehicle. If that holds true, we are extremely limited with the 21 & 22’s and maybe even the 20” wheels.

Tire Rack says the front requires an “XL” tire so I think 115 load like stock 22” tire. What’s the top speed? 115 mph? I think T or above would work. And yes this severely limits tire choices which I don’t think most realize. On Tire Rack I only see one non OEM 20” and 22” that meet these specs.

Wow this has a big impact on total cost of ownership. If the tires for the 21" wheels are that much more expensive and will only last 20k miles, it almost negates any electricity savings due to having more range over tires for the 20" wheels including the cost of the wheels (for non-launch edition buyers)...over a 10 year period.

Drive it gently and you can get more miles. You just won’t have as much fun

I wonder if that's the trade-off with the Low Rolling Resistance. I had originally hoped that there might at least be 1 or 2 decent alternatives from Michelin or Hankook by the time I need to get my first new set of tires but based on what people are reporting for wear that's looking highly unlikely. I know you're probably not going to get 60,000 miles out of any tires on an R1T but I'd like to be able to at least get 40 or so.

Might as well not even rotate them if you're only going to get 10k miles out of a set. Here's hoping Michelin comes out with a long life efficiency tire in the right size.

Actually you could argue you should rotate them every 2000 if they wear that fast.

Agree, it would be nice to get 40K or more before one has to replace expensive tires. I drive fairly easy on mostly residential side streets with lot's of folks out on nice days, you have to be mindful of kids, pets and bicycles. That being said, I would hope to get at least 4 years at 5 or 6K a year.

I used to have Scorpion Verde All Season tires on my XC90 when I owned it.

The tire wear was normal and not excessive at all. While I cannot tell how the EV compound version will wear, at least the original tires compound was fine. The tires were quiet and smooth. I had replaced Michelin Latitude HP.

I do not expect any tires to last much more than 35~40K miles, regardless of wear ratings. I am still hopeful that Michelin will have AS tires to fit Rivian at some point sooner than later but who knows.

My rule of thumb for tire life is:
Summer performance tire 25~30K miles
AS performance tires 30~35K miles
AS SUV/Lt Truck tires 35~40K miles

It all has to do with how sticky the tire is and how heavy the vehicle is. Clearly heavy acceleration and braking makes a difference as well as how hard/fast cornering is done since they all are function of stickiness and weight, in simple terms.

A lot of this has been mentioned, but as the owner of a Prius (which is a heavy car) the tires need to be rotated and you will get less miles out of a tire. The R1T is a VERY heavy vehicle compared to a regular ICE truck with lots of torque which is going to wear tires quickly. Unfortunately a downside to hybrids and EV's. Of course the money that you should save in fuel and lack of maintenance should outweigh the tire situation. I live in the Northeast and I change my tires seasonally anyways.

This is one of the frustrating parts about the lack of availability of extra wheels/tires from Rivian. I'd really like to have a set of the 20" ATs for winters around here, and keep the 21s for our like 4 months of summer, which is when we do most of our road trips. That certainly helps keep tires lasting longer, too.

How you drive can make as much impact on tire wear as how much you drive.

My first i3 didn't make it to 13K miles before I had to replace the rear tires. That's because I was gunning it at every light - and every opportunity I got because the torque and speed, especially off the line, is addicting.

I quickly realized I was going to blow through thousands of dollars in tires so I started putting the car in "comfort" or "eco" mode more often - and laying off the accelerator, and it make a huge difference. The second set lasted me over 20K miles.

When I lived in Austin I would do that all the time. I lived right off Rt 45 and Mopac and there are stoplights on those highways. So it was quite often I'd be at a stop with a clear path up to highway speeds. So of course I'd floor it every single stupid time.

You don't need to test the 0-60 daily to wear the hell out of your tires quickly. Just having a heavy foot off the line, whatever the speed limit is, is enough to accelerate wear.
