Multiple Tesla Owner Hopping Over to Rivian

New guy and Tesla owner here.

To date, Ive owned two Model 3's, a Model Y Performance, and now a Model S LR Refresh. My wife owns a Model Y LR as well. Im ready for a change and Rivian was it.

I initially ordered a R1S, on 8/31/22 but that wait would pretty much murder my brain. Id assume it to be a good way, at least a year +. So, after debating with the wife on pros and cons of going to a truck, we figure a R1T will suit our needs better.

Main points were the kids are getting older, so no need for three rows. The gear tunnel seems legit. The biggest, Ive never owned a truck. Figure if I dislike it, Ill sell it for the R1S down the road.

Hope I get a golden ticket to check out the inventory shortly. I know Im a new order, and there are tons of you ahead, but hey.... I gotta have faith! HA!

Hows everyone like their R1T's? Any Tesla converts like me?

I've had several Model S's, a few Model 3's. After 9 years in a Tesla, was happy just to try something different. Yes, the Tesla UI can't be beat. That's 10 years of experience. But, do I miss the Model S? I find that I really don't. Maybe once in a while, would it be nice to have Tesla's AP capability on the highway. But often times, the way it drove forced me to take over most of the time anyway. Now, I just don't have the option as Rivian's self driving assist is lagging far behind. Hopefully will improve.

Being that Rivian followed in the footsteps of Tesla for much of its UI design, for those coming from a Tesla, it will already feel quite familiar.

I'm not one that travels all that often. Yes, Tesla's supercharging network is VERY nice for those that do. I also had free supercharging, so I do notice it when I pay the EV America bill. But, Tesla is one that inflates their range figures. The Rivian range figures are far more accurate. I have another thread on this forum where I was actually able to drive further with the Rivian than I ever did with the Tesla, despite the Tesla telling me (inaccurately) that I had 100 more miles in range from the start. So, other than having to now pay for it, I actually prefer travelling with the Rivian.

I never really used any of Tesla's party tricks. They were cool to show off to friends, but never served much of a useful purpose. Tesla's app function is notably superior. But, I can live with what Rivian offers. And again, it's sure to improve over time (just did last week).

The enhanced summon feature was one thing I found a use for on occasion. But, not enough to where it was a "must have" feature.

Yes, the Tesla is a superior EV. It should be with 10 years of experience. Those switching over however, have to determine which of Tesla's features are "must haves" and determine if they can live without those.

The benefits: I no longer have a dime a dozen looking car, especially in the L.A. area. I love the auto open frunk. Tesla's was practically useless. The Rivian's is as easy to use as any normal trunk. I love being up higher. Never have to worry about bottoming it out, which was a common concern for me in the Tesla. The adjustable suspension is great.

After 9 years of looking at basically the same looking car, happy just to have something DIFFERENT. Aside from being unique, it's a cool vehicle. Love the 120v / 110v outlets. The air compressor is a feature than can come in handy. Obviously, a truck gives you plenty of storage space. Of the important "must have" things that I want out of an EV, the Rivian satisfies most of them, plus offers so many more unique features.

After 3 months, versus 9 years in the Tesla, I'm still adapting to the difference in how they drive. But, other than that, I haven't found myself missing the Tesla at all.

Items I hope Rivian will improve soon to make some features more comparable include:
1. GPS proximity for auto-open of the garage when pulling up.
2. Make the keyfob passive, as they are with the Tesla.
3. Improve Driver+ to be at least what Tesla's original AP was.
4. Offer an auto-park feature. Even Tesla's original 40 feet forward or back basic option with the keyfob or phone app would be nice to have for tight parking spaces.
5. Rivian's navigation system still needs significant improvement
6. Rivian needs to offer a slider bar to set charging limits. The 70/85/100 are too wide of gaps.
7. Rivian needs to improve the app to allow you to set charging limits and to start/stop charging from the app.
8. Have Rivian work with the various charging networks to automatically recognize the vehicle so you just plug and charge, rather than having to take the extra steps necessary to start and pay for charging. Some non-Tesla EV's are doing this. Hopefully Rivian will do the same.

The list of potential improvements goes on and on, but those are the ones that would bring the Rivian up to a point where there's basically nothing from the Tesla that I either, miss, or simply would like to have the capability of.

Currently own a Model 3 and can't wait to replace it with an R1T! I am a bit scared that I've become used to how well the Tesla UI works and I'll be frustrated with the newness of the Rivian software, but I have faith that it will improve over time.

Awesome reply! I would miss some things, like you stated, but Im not a huge traveler either. I could live without a lot of the perks of a Tesla.

I have both a MYLR and a MY. I guess the MY is more practical, but TBH I haven’t used it much since the MS arrived a month ago.

Have never once used YouTube or Netflix in my car, but I’ll massively miss the green light BING if Rivian doesn’t come out with one!

I had an 21 MYP I traded in at a crazy inflated offer for the Model S Refresh. Great vehicle, but the wife hates the yoke. I actually love it. Not enough to keep it though. LOL

I use it all the time while waiting around places. Id just end up having to use my iPad though. What a chore! HAHA

The greatest thing that amazes me about Tesla is their charging network - but they've had 10 years to develop it. The greatest thing that also amazes me about Tesla is their shoddy build quality. I have several friends who own Tesla's and even the newest of the bunch has mis-aligned panels both inside and outside (like 1/8-1/4" variances). Seems silly that people will accept this from a $60k car.

As stated, Ive owned 4 Teslas myself, and the wife owns 1. Not one of ours has had panels gaps, etc. Nothing. Agreed though, Id never accept that.

Kind of like this R1S! I wouldnt accept this either!

To the OP, I had to laugh when I saw this. I’m in the exact same place. I just picked up my 5th Tesla, a Model 3 Performance two weeks ago and put a order in on a R1T last week. I went back and forth between the S and the T, but think the T will win out. Ready for change!
