Rivian will have a massive warranty recall for its tonneau covers eventually, and it wants as many customers as possible to be close to a service center. Sending dozens of unclaimed trucks to a high volume service center like Bellevue (Seattle area) may make more sense than satisfying dozens of long standing orders for customers located 600+ miles from a service center.

If Rivian anticipates other major warranty recalls (loose bolts, bad steering alignment, slack in the drive train, etc) they would be even more motivated to keep their sold inventory close to service centers.
I 100% agree because that makes logistical sense. But there have been atleast a few members here who live hours away from a SC and had to have their trucks loaded onto a flatbed. With more seasoned preorder holders than that living within 30-60 mins of a SC who haven’t even been contacted yet. And with as many folks as there are on here willing to fly half way across the country to pick their truck up, I would think the odds of matching one up with a different customer would be fairly easy. I just have a hard time thinking Rivian would setup the R1 Shop because there was enough unclaimed inventory and they didn’t want vehicles just sitting at a location like a traditional dealership. They should know how many of each build customers want before they start the batches.

That being said though, there seem to be a lot more people that are flexible or impartial enough to change practically anything on a truck just to get it sooner. So maybe Rivian knows this and it makes production that much easier for them since they could just cookie cutter those specific builds more than they need to for efficiency.

What they can't know is how many customers care more about having a truck ASAP than having their exact config built. And if Shop buyers have a 100% follow through to payment, that's higher than the average reservation holder. This all makes sense in the context of an end-of-quarter push for results.

There have been so many anecdotal outliers that it really does seem to be a lottery. But lately the trend is toward higher overall throughput, not lower latency. I bet they are batching not just at the factory, but also to minimize rail transport costs, maximize the service center QA uptime and best utilize service center parking lot space.

Checked into the shop today expecting to see the usual yellow with FG interior available and WHOA! They must have dumped 50 R1T's in there. Every color, all interiors. I was holding out for a manual tonneau, but, what the hell, I'm tired of waiting. Rivian blue it is.
What shop are you referring too?

You'll be invited by Rivian to get Shop access unless your exact build is ready before you get access.
Not necessarily true. Shop access is based on pre order date. My exact config was dropped into the shop on the big shop drop. But, there are many in line before me so someone without that config grabbed it. A tad frustrating albeit understandable.

Very true.

I figured they would use the data from configuration changes made when contacted by guides. Like the customers who switched from OC to BM a few months ago and the others asking about the underbody shield and the wheel choices. Granted the underbody shielding and wheels would require a forum search.

I certainly won’t argue that Rivian makes a 100% follow through to payment by using the Shop. Which, again, makes logistical sense for the push.

I just wish they would open that R1 Shop up to people in chronological preorder date and let the customers decide if there is a vehicle build that works for them. I’m only speaking from my experience here, but I’ve seen people with late 2021 preorders get Shop access because they have BM or FE interiors (I’m assuming that’s why). We have a July ā€˜21 preorder and we live about 20 miles from the Rockville, MD SC and haven’t been contacted yet. I saw earlier today where someone said there were even trucks with OC interiors on the Shop. That’s why I wondered if I should change our interior to BM to try and get a party invite. ?

Haha I’m ā€œpatientlyā€ waiting because I know there are a lot of people that have been waiting much longer than us that haven’t even had a chance to drive one yet. But if I can shorten the wait and still get the exact truck we configured from the start, I’d surely entertain the idea!

Access to the Rivian Shop is given by invite based on when you ordered. It’s an extra tab added to the website that allows you to see ā€œorphanedā€ trucks. You then have the ability to take one of those in lieu of your order. Usually there are at most 4 trucks available and many days none. Yesterday, Rivian dropped in a lot and you can see from other posts the speculation that they may be making an end of quarter push

Doesn’t the R1 shop seem like a lazy way to move vehicles? Wouldn’t a simple order spreadsheet with customers in order for different batches make more sense? I don’t understand how if a customer decides they don’t want their R1, that was built to a certain spec, that that vehicle wouldn’t just go to the next customer in line for that spec. We’re talking tens of thousands of orders right? There has to be atleast hundreds of customers wanting that same spec truck ready to grab it. I get it from a volume moving standpoint since the trucks go almost as quickly as they’re posted, just kinda sucks for 2-3+ year preorder holders waiting patiently. The Rivian Lottery is real.

It would almost make sense at this point to switch our interior to BM just to get a shop invite, and then wait for an OC R1T with our specs to show up wouldn’t it?
The plant doesn't have a bunch of extra room to stock parts for the different configuration. Rivian builds the vehicles when they have parts available. They might have a person they are initially building for, but if that deal falls through or they don't respond quick enough, it goes into the R1 shop instead of being automatically rematched.

I envy you guys. I can't seem to get invited into the R1 Shop with an 11/28/2018 order date.
Sucks to have a long wait but I see in your signature that you had an explore package ordered until they cancelled it about a month ago. At this point, I suspect you will hear soon on your updated adventure R1T order but you can't really be surprised when explore was always going to ship later before they cancelled it.

Thanks, it the tab located after you sign in? I ordered at the end of 2019, you would think I would qualify. Oh well, thanks

For me it was a green banner across the top of the page after logging in. Keep in mind, though, it didn't just appear... I received an email welcoming me to the shop and received a guide at the same time.

You shouldn't be "surprised" when you get access, but you'll see there have been cases of this in the forums.

But why wouldn’t it go to the next person in line with that same configuration? It can’t be that the others in line behind the first person are all too far from a SC can it? I think I just need to stop trying to rationalize and decode the Rivian lottery. ?

Yeah. My exact spec showed up in the "big shop drop" with Ocean Coast. Sucks that it didn't go to someone (probably way earlier in line then me) who has that spec configured already.

Jim,
If you are 2019 you should have shop access unless you are configured for a Max Pack, like I am. I did not change my configuration like many others did but I wrote a nice note to CS and told them I would be willing to switch to large. A couple days later I had a guide and shop access. Still have not pulled the trigger as I am waiting for the new delivery window email. Perhaps foolishly.
